Penguin pale ale

Bottle with Julian code 01516, roughly May '16, which sounds super fresh if a bottling date... tastes more like an expiration date though.

Pours a bright saturated orange with rising carb trails, minimal head or lacing, just a ring of loose bubbles around the edge of the glass. Still glassy surface with a bare web of faint skim on the surface.

Aroma of wet grains, vague cereal sweetness. Pretty bland.

Taste has a little malty flavor, and a lingering earthy hop bitterness. No assertive hop flavor. Pretty basic, bland and ho-hum unfortunately. Relatively substantial feel, it has carbonation and a light to medium body.

Overall this does nothing adventurous or even showcases simple well-made attributes.
It may be past it's freshness date, if so i'll try to re-rate at some point.

Penguin Pale Ale has light hints of hops on the nose. Amazing malt character and hints of toasted caramel to taste - Heavier in the malt aspects in comparison to other pale ales. Very drinkable. Bottled from Total in MKE.

Pours an orange color with an average white head. Smell is citrusy. Taste is orange peels with a weird aftertaste. Kind of tastes like bad orange peels. Mouthfeel is light. Overall, not my favorite.

12oz bottle of the new bottling run. Blue label bottle served in a snifter glass.

Pours a dark amber-orange body, one finger white head with fair retention, splotches of lacing. Slight metallic aroma comes out initially and goes away as it warms. Toffee, caramel, a bit of pine, marmalade. It's nothing too complicated. Flavour is similarly uncomplicated; toffee, caramel, pine, a bit of marmalade. It's almost like a slightly piney English bitter. Mouthfeel is thin bodied, depth is a bit lacking and is mostly a little bit of sweetness up front and a mild bitterness at the end. There is even a little bit of alcohol heat, which is surprising. Nothing too special here, I would look elsewhere for an every day American Pale Ale.
