So I'm stuck in State College and check the internet for bars and up pops Otto's that claims to be a brewery. Well I had to try it but did not harbor high hopes; after all, how many brew pubs fail to meet expectations? I was happy to find my apprehension entirely unfounded. Otto's makes good beer across the board. This double IPA is a great example. Overall take-away: it's super hoppy bitter, maybe lacks the finesse and depth of the leaders, but this is no impostor. Pours a syrupy, murky orange-amber, almost no head or lacing (as if that matters much?) moderate carbonation; I let it warm up a little before tasting and the carbonation dissipated. Aroma is fairly typical citrus-pine thing, quite a lot of aromatics. On the palate it is pretty blunt, reminiscent of Hop Mouth of recent memory, not a lot of sweetness or fruit up front, but a potent bitter (like black tea) lingering finish that lasts a long time.

I tasted the draft version and it was comparable.

Had a chance to enjoy several of these hoppy nectar as part of the Hop Devil Grill's Hop fest in NYC a few weeks ago. Poured cloudy dark amber, with a dense dark tan head. Head leaves fine sheets of lacing on the glass. Grainy hop nose tickles the nostrils. Enjoyable DIPA, quite respectable grainy and resiny hop crunch. Just another very hoppy and very tasty DIPA, life is good, if you like the style, and I guess alot of us do cause everybody is brewin' them. This one is well worth a try if you see it at your local watering spot.

Thanks to thirdeye11 for sharing this bottle.

Pours slightly cloudy orange/yellow with a minimal white head. The aroma is very hoppy, with lots of citrus and orange notes as well as some piney resin. The flavor is lots of pine, but not too much bitterness. Very drinkable, medium mouthfeel.

From my friend Ryan out in State College as payoff for besting his fantasy baseball team this summer...murky brownish red body with a healthy whitish inch head...thick tracings of lace...pine/spruce leap from the hops...the aroma offers no suggestion of balance in the ingerdients, but I’m patient...medium, oily body with a lively feel on the tongue....NO sense of alcohol---indeed a pleasant experience...lightly bitter with hints of fruit...lightly (?) hoppy....seems to retreat as swallowed...smooth and respectful, as the malt flattens out the hops--ideal in an IPA...moral of the story: my team finished first, and this beer suits that finish.

Picked up at the brewpub meself. The silly cartoon now makes sense, it's big on malt and on hops. Cloudy with an off-white bubbly head. CItrus aroma, and the dot loace. Big mouthfeel: big bitterness and big maltiness. Above average mouthfeel. Big and bold, hits the mark.

Special thanks to nhindian for sending this as part of the 2011 Stanley Cup BIF.

Pours a lighter shade of amber with a huge, wonderfully creamy head. The lacing lingers all the way to the bottom.

The smell is a bit weak, but hints of sweet citrus and pine can be found.

Malt up front with tangerine and grapefrui following. There is a huge blast of pine resin and pineapple at the end and continues to the finish. This is a very long finish. Pine needles linger for quite some time, making me thirsty for more.

The feel is full bodied and velvety. I love beers with some substance and this certainly delivers. Nearly perfect carbonation.

This was a very drinkable brew. A bomber was perfect for me, but I wish I had a few more for future enjoyment.

22oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a beautiful clear amber with a nice thick almost tannish head and leaving behind some intermittant sticky lace down the sides. Aroma is straight up citrus and hops with a little sweetness trailing at the end.

Taste is of overpowering hoppy citrus and pine the whole way through. Luckily a nice, sweet malt backbone is present to help even this hop monster out. Mouthfeel is full and thick and keeps it's carbonation nicely.

Even though this doesn't seem as beefy as some other Double IPAs, it's definitely very quaffable for a nearly 8% brew and is sure to please your inner hop head.

Poured from a growler. Rich, orangey floral daggers fly at my nose. Crisp sugar ans syrup rides out. Pours a deepened bronze. Strong rim of white. Flavor takes a backseat the aroma and holds a lesser sense of hop importance. A nip of thinness and alcohol showing. Malt and honey flow through. Good play between the malt and hops, but sometimes neither holds up their respective end of the bargain. Love the spicy, bready rich finish.
