Appearance: Very dark brown with a medium-sized, tan, creamy mostly diminishing head. Attractive rings of lacing.

Smell: Very nice dark roasted aroma. light coffee, moderate chocolate, molasses, a little herbal.

Taste: Smooth, smoky, malty, a little bit sweet without going overboard, light berry

Mouthfeel: The smooth texture from the hand pump compliments this beer very well. It feels almost velvety, Full-bodied but not overly filling.

Drinkability: This is remarkably easy going down. A slight bitterness on the finish encourages every next sip. One of my favorite beers that they offer (but I am a sucker for a good porter.

Hand pumped from a cask for Firkin' Friday at Otto's

A - Dark brown with virtually no head, which was to be expected for a non-carbonated hand pump.

S - Initial smell was tobacco and roasted chocolate malt. Tobacco character faded as the beer was allowed to warm, and notes of chocolate and coffee came through

T&M - Full bodied, creamy and smooth. Tobacco notes come through in the taste, along with the dark roasted malt character, chocolate and espresso. There is a slight ashy flavor, and again the light wood character is detectable.

D - Very enjoyable; this could easily be my go to beer at Otto's were it not only available on Fridays!

Notes: Served too cold IMHO. I knew enough to allow it to warm a bit, but most of the flavors were not as present at the temp served.

Had on-tap at Otto's Brewery in State College, PA - served in a pint glass.

L: Pours off cask a deep brown, almost black with a moderate tannish head. Minimal lacing.

S: Roasted malts dominate, some chocolate and toffee on the nose.

T/F: Very smooth off of the hand pump, minimal carbonation. Taste is roasted like a porter... a little watery perhaps? Roasted malts dominate. Semi-sweet, and mild on the alcohol.

O: Glad I tried it, but it will never be a go-to beer for me. Solid but unspectacular.... and missing that extra something that would have made it exceptional.

Hand pull at Zeno's.

A: Dark, black even. Not much more needed to say there. The head is off-white but not very exciting to look at. It lacks the creamy denseness of a nitro, just a thin band.

S: The nose is roasted, bitter with little in the way of balancing flavors. As compared to the Poe Paddy, this one stresses the roasted acrid side of the dark malts.

T: Darker malts, chocolate and stout flavors, reasonably acrid. The hand pump, I'm afraid, doesn't add much depth. The roasted flavors, mild bitterness, run throughout.

M: Not a big fan of this. The handpump doesn't add much to the darkly roasted porter flavors.

Served on cask at the brewpub in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer was served a deep brown color with a small tan head. The head faded rather fast giving very little lacing.

Smell – The nose is quite light. There are hints of raosty malt with a very light coffee and chocolate aroma.

Taste – The taste was of roasted malt up front. A dark bread mixed with a very light amount of roasted coffee and chocolate. There is a light sweetness of brown sugar and a very small amount of vanilla in the beginning and the middle of the taste. The flavors bitter more toward the end at the expense of the sweet, and leave a somewhat roasty and somewhat bitter flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – A nice creamy body with a lighter level of carbonation. Very classic for a cask with some accentuation of the body. The creaminess complements the roasty flavors quite nicely.

Overall – It was worth a try, but one I would likely not go back to any time soon. It had a very nice mouthfeel, but was pretty average in every other category.
