American ale. Big, bold, and intense. Brewed in the style of classic barleywine. Served lightly carbonated through the handpump at cellar temperature.

Served on cask, rich gold with thick creamy head. More of an American style barleywine, the hops are pretty muscular, lots of strong fusel notes, maybe a tad medicinal, certainly strong, undertones of warm nut and sweet, aged malt, mouthfeel is great from the cask very velvety

Had on-cask at Otto's in State College, PA (many times) - poured into a snifter
L: Pours a deep mahogany with 2 fingers of generous off-white head that takes awhile to fall. Nice lacing.
S: Malty and boozy... with old fashioned candies (molasses and toffee) and possibly some brown sugar.
T/F: Big and boozy with lots of alcohol warmth. This one doesn't even make a pretense of hiding the 12% ABV. Still... nice complex flavor that is on the malty side without being overly sweet. Not nearly as hoppy as some of the California barleywine's (Lagunitas 'Gnarly Wine' and Stone 'Old Guardian'). Mild carbonation and pretty smooth.
O: This is a sipper and one that I have to be in the mood for. Not as balanced as I'd like from a barleywine and a bit abrasive with the high ABV. Still... it's a flavorful and well put together beer that doesn't taste quite like anything else and it's one that I will often have to finish a session at Otto's (in lieu of dessert). Worth a shot, and not one that they bottle so it's brewery only (when available).

Served from hand pump in a snifter
Appearance – Poured a hazy orange color with a thin white head. The head faded fast leaving a thin ever persistent film and some very nice lacing.
Smell – The smell was big of bread and biscuit mixed with a huge boozy aroma. Mingling with these aromas was a lighter hay like/ grassy aroma and a moderate funky aroma.
Taste – The taste was rather disappointing overall. It was heavy on a biscuit and bread like flavor at first. The taste was on the dryer side with only a very light amount of sweetness. This was a base of the taste and the only real change in the taste occurred toward the middle to end where a very heavy alcohol flavor came to the tongue. This alcohol was not too pleasant however and instead was more on the burning side of the flavor profile leaving a very cheap boozy flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The mouthfeel was quite nice. It was creamy in body with a lower level of carbonation. Very good taste penetration due to the nice mouthfeel, which if the beerwould have tasted better, would have been wonderful.
Overall – Otto’s for the most part does a wonderful job with most of their brews. While the look and mouthfeel of this brew were fantastic, the rather funky aroma and quite offensive alcohol and uni-dimensional flavor leave much to be desired. This is one they have to work on a bit.

Served on cask at Otto's.
Poured a hazy orangish/ brown with a nice white head.
Nice grainy and malt aroma in Barley Wine fashion.
Taste is dominated with the malt and grain, some sweet fruit comes out along with the alcohol.
Very big mouth feel with the dry grain and sweet fruit and the alcohol kick.
Nice enjoyable sipping beer that is a very nice cask beer.

A-Gorgeous deep copper with an amazingly thick off-white head that lasts and lasts. Copious lace left behind.
S-Mmmmm....Heat, followed by spicy hops, followed by malty sweetness.
T-Licorice and caramel sweetness and then....wait for it, BAM! Spicy citrus hop bitterness.
M-Medium body with low carbonation making very smooth. All of this backed up with a good lasting bitterness.
D-Potent, and that is the limiting factor. It surely isn't the taste that holds this one back for it abounds. Hop bitterness rules here with a nicely supportive sweet malt bill backing things up. A wonderful cold weather, fireside sipper.

Had this on cask today when I went for the Jolly Roger release. Had it poured into a snifter...
A: Hazy and murky dark salmon color with a nice, creamy one finger head that lasts about five minutes. Does not lace at all and is pretty much completely opaque from the haze.
S: The one word to describe the smell is wort. This smells exactly like a boiling batch of homebrew. Tons of malts and fresh hops. The smell also comes with a touch of alcohol, but in an inviting way.
T: The taste is a blast of malts and alcohol blended with a sweet caramel and fresh hops. At first the beer does not seem as strong and fierce as it actually is. It comes off inviting with a sweet caramel malt taste, but on the finish is very strong with alcohol. The fact that this was a sipper and warmed rather quickly did not make the alcohol any more inviting.
Overall, this is the epitome of a sipper. Very strong with the alcohol and a very sweet malt taste.

The beer pours an amber/orange color with a 1/2" offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a great malty scent that that boasts of pale, crystal, and roasted malts. It's warming to the nose and has a pretty good hop aroma as well. The taste is great. It has a really nice malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes warm with some hop bitterness in the end. It's great from the cask. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a very drinkable barleywine. The malt character is outstanding.
