A classic American IPA with lots of floral punch and assertive hop presence. Brewed with Nugget and Amarillo hops. Reddish in color thanks to Munich and Aromatic malts.

Returned to State College after a long absence and had this for the first time in many years. This is an old-timer, going back to the earliest days of Otto's (2002). Very different from the current crop of NEIPAs; with a rich texture, a first appearance of aggressive hops fades to reveal a very tasty malt backbone. I kept wanting to return to that malt, first peeking through the hops and then coming to the fore. Very satisfying and a nice surprise.

Travelled from Chicago to Pennsylvania and under recommendation from a local I picked up a six pack of the Slab Cabin. Slab Cabin came in a six pack of cans, and I waited until returning back to Chicago to chill and try one out. Let’s just say, thank you to the random suggestion because now I’m hooked and wish I could get it more often and wish I brought back more then just six.
Looks like your typical IPA with maybe a slight redder tone then most, pours like a smooth IPA with no haze, and in the right glass a perfect head. This is a very smooth IPA to drink with no bitter aftertaste. The smooth taste makes this IPA an add on to one of my favorite IPA’s.

After sledding in Slab Cabin Park this morning we decided to go to Otto's and have a Slab Cabin IPA! This is a great basic IPA! Good balance overall.

The IPA is under constant change, scrutiny and reinvention. But the classic, genuine and purely American IPA taste is alive and well in the hands of Otto's Pub and Brewery.
With a classic hazy amber pour, Slab Cabin IPA crowns with a dense ecru froth and greets the nose with a floral scent of orange peel and pine that wafts over a rich and toasty caramel scent. Deep caramel dips into the light toffee side while the savory nuances of bread crust, toast and pecan encroach onto the early palate.
Simmering sweetness makes way for the growing hops to lay down a resinous coat of grapefruit and orange on the middle palate. Lessening its sweetness, the hops develop into a peppery, sappy bitterness late on the palate for a stemmy, leafy character that seems of pine and grassiness.
Medium bodied and retaining a malty balance, the beer's malty dry finish comes with the sprucy and peppery character to suggest juniper and gin. Certainly not west coast dry, Otto's IPA is a throwback to when the American micro brewery took the English IPA and made it their own.

Pours darker than most IPAs. Color is almost like weak coffee. Nose is steeping of hops. Head was non-existent. Taste is hoppy with a caramel overtone. Good beer.

12oz bottle into a tall glass. NO freshness dating.
Amber body with massive thick creamy head, so much so that I had to spoon some out. naturally, there were gobs of lacing. Very heavy carbonation too.
Nice aroma of floral hops.
Mild flavors, extremely drinkable. The carbonation doesn't affect the drink. very nicely balanced.
Mouth around medium, slightly bitter and faintly sour on the finish.
Overall, drinkable, even slammable mild well balanced ipa. Hopheads might not appreciate it, but it's almost English in its presentation.

Otto's Pub and Brewery "Slab Cabin IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without freshness dating
$2 @ Wegmans, State College, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, it's darker than I thought it would be, it's a deep copper with orange highlights. I'd call it darker than even an English IPA should be. It's clear though, and the finger thick head of off-white seems to be holding well. I'm not finding a lot in the aroma. The flavor is quite rich though, loaded with darkly caramelish and bready/grainy malt, and livened by some spicy and gently piney and citrusy hops. They're not bright, but they're sufficient to balance the malt on the flavor side, and a very firm bitterness balances it on the sweet side and it finishes mostly dry with some residual malt and bitterness fading, leaving only earthy and piney hops behind. It's nicely balanced, and fresh and clean - I was worried I'd be opening an old bottle but it's not - although it's not an American IPA according to the guidelines that most brewers follow. And I won't go into the reasons for that because if you're reading this you either already know what I'm talking about or you can look it up. So, do I ding it for that or just score it hedonistically? I think I'll give them a pass because even though they advertise it as "a classic American IPA" at the brewery the label makes no mention of that. And it's a pretty good beer overall, more of an English IPA, but whatever. Nicely done. Medium bodied and gently crisp then smooth across the palate. Quite drinkable in fact.
