22 oz, Wheatsville Co-op in Austin, TX. $7.99 or so.
A: Darker brown. Light head with a copper tint. Solid.
S: Sweet syrup and pine, plain and simple. Malts, malts, malts. Surprisingly absent is the alcohol.
T: Sugar and syrup, with pine interjecting at the 3/4 mark. Almost exact the smell.
M: The shining star of this beer. Perfect mouthfeel. Thick and syrup. A model for DIPAs.
O: Very strange, but it works. Less sweetness would be nice. Certainly unusual, but I think a few months would do this beer well.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #72 (Jan 2013):
We love that this is pretty much a full departure from the usual drill of an Imperial IPA. The element of have a bit of wood character throws another layer into the mesh. It may not be the golden boy of the style but it certainly lands within and is a hell of alot more interesting.
STYLE: American Double IPA
ABV: 9.0%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round
LOOK: Hazy reddish hue, impressive head
SMELL: Tropical fruit, citrus zest, faint vanilla, subtle oak, clementines, floral, peppery alcohol, light brown sugar
TASTE: Chewy, smooth, pungent, citrus rind, minty, blonde tobacco, leafy, fresh grass, papaya, apple skin, hint of wood, green peppercorn, nutty yeast, piney, bitter, puckering dry finish

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass. No obvious bottle dating.
Deep orange amber body, nearly red looking like a classic amber ale. Thin tan head, perhaps barely two fingers with little retention. Manages a thin collar and a thin interesting weepy like sheet lacing on the glass.
Aroma is pretty basic amber ale quality. Not much hop front, hints of simple caramel very mild sensing herbality as well but extremely non existent hop nose. Really not much going on, and nothing to hint that this is an IPA of any sort coming forward.
Palate livens up a a bit. Caramel notes with some tasting hop bitterness. Slightly mellow pine and a bit of grapefruit slightly. Steely a bit but with a bit of a thin wash on the finish. Manages a mild astringency but with not a lot of distinct character. Perhaps a little bit of mild biscuit as well.
Overall as a slightly hop malty amber or just an amber ale, it's fine but as an IPA it really isn't bringing in the goods on that front.

This was an extra in a trade. Hazy dark copper-amber pour with a nice two finger beige head with great retention and lacing. The nose is subdued with some subtle fruity, perfumey hop notes along with hints of caramel, butterscotch, and bread. The taste is malt forward with some piney, bitter hoppiness along with hints of squash, orange peel, toffee, and molasses. The mouthfeel is slightly oily, syrupy, and a bit chewy with decent balance and a tangy bitter finish. Overall, I see now why this was an extra. Very average...

Lacking a bit for an imperial but otherwise, a good brew. Nice color, low on the hop aroma. Normal mouthfeel for a light IPA not for an IIPA. Could use a bit more thickness. Mellow hop presence but light enough for a TX summer night.
Keep up the good work Rogness.
