BOTTLE: 22 fl oz. Brown glass. Unbranded black pry-off pressure cap.
Acquired: At Whichcraft in Austin, TX.
Reviewed live at low altitude in Austin, TX. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
Vintage: 2014. Bottled: 10/9/14. I believe this is Batch #1.
ABV: 7.22%.
Style: Bourbon chip aged stout (per the label).
Serving temp: Cold. Allowed to warm over the course of consumption.
Serving vessel: Pilsner glass.
Expectations: Above average (given the brewery).
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~1 inch wide pale khaki colour head. Decent frothiness and creaminess. Could be fuller, thicker, and softer. Leaves scant lacing on the sides of the glass as it slowly recedes.
Retention: Above average. ~3-4 minutes.
BODY: Opaque solid black. No yeast or hop sediment is visible therein. Appears aptly carbonated.
Looks nice for the style, but doesn't stand out as unique or special.
AROMA: Nice coffee aromatics, including a hint of rich java and a kiss of roast. Brief chocolate malt. A hint of cocoa nibs. Subtle touches of bourbon set off the aforementioned notes nicely; the bourbon chip is well-integrated albeit a biteen reticent, without much oak or vanilla presence.
Aromatic intensity: average.
Suggests a simple, well balanced, basic bourbon chip stout with decent coffee and chocolate notes.
TASTE: The fundamentals are there; the chocolate is nice and plays well with the faint coffee, and the subtle bourbon chip character lends a kiss of vanilla that accentuates the chocolate. But it's a bit shallow; the chocolate just isn't that expressive and nor is the coffee, and the bourbon chip character is underplayed and reticent, complementing the malts nicely but never really going deep enough. It's very well-balanced, but there just isn't much here. The dark-and-chocolate malt backbone is exactly what you'd expect, and the absence of roast (in terms of both roasted barley and the coffee) is problematic. I do like the unexpected malted milk/whopper character, which will appeal to fatigued fans of the style.
Depth of flavour: Relatively shallow.
Flavour duration: Fairly brief.
Flavour intensity: Below average.
Flavour amplitude: Nice.
It's a tasty beer for what it is - which is a local no-frills bourbon stout. Cohesive but not quite gestalt. Simple, with limited subtlety and nuance. There are infinitely more intricate examples of the style available - even widely - and while this is a nice beer in general, it just can't run with the big dogs.
Luckily, there's no blatant off-character, and no inappropriate yeast or alcohol.
TEXTURE: Smooth, milky, somewhat creamy, wet, and unrefreshing. Medium-bodied, with apt thickness, heft, and weight. Overall presence on the palate is good, even if it is overcarbonated.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.
This mouthfeel is pretty standard, and doesn't quite accentuate any individual notes. It doesn't elevate the beer as a whole, but it does complement the taste nicely. Nice execution.
OVERALL: This beer will see much love from locals, but the discerning drinker will see both its flaws and its potential. Yes, it's a relatively simple offering in a market category that is rife with intricate complex brews, but it succeeds in elegant balance and will please any fan of the style. Not an impressive or world class brew, but a pleasing one at this price point. I could see myself sending this off to trade partners as a fun local extra, but it doesn't warrant much discussion, and there are far better bourbon stouts in the Austin, TX market.

It pours a solid black color & has a strong aroma of dark chocolate & roasty malts. The initial few sips mirror this but as it warmed up, the coffee flavor starting to peek through. A nice, slightly bitter coffee kick. Despite the ABV, its very smooth without being too "boozy". Great stout that i'll be picking up again soon.

Espresso black pour with a small brown head that dissipates quickly. Great aroma of semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malt and light alcohol. Medium body has a great mix of chocolate, coffee and dark malt. Can also taste hints vanilla, cocoa, and bourbon. Finishes sweet with a lingering flavor of semi-sweet chocolate.
