I picked up this 0.33l bottle at Liebick in Germering, near Munich, on 24SEP13. Having made it safely home, it is time to sample. Has a best by date of 08FEB14. Label has ingredients as water, pale and dark barley malts, hops, top fermenting yeast". Also says "Kräftige, blumige Hopfennoten; nichts für Warmduscher". Not for pussies!! Love it!

Poured into a small tulip, the color is an opaque, motor-oil-like brown. Head sits at about 1/4", and is mocha colored and frothy. Lacing is decent, too. The aroma has a lot of roasty notes and pithy hopping. It goes over the tongue quite nicely, and the body is a smidge thicker than medium.

Flavor has some bitter dark choco and roasty coffee action, but soon takes a sharp turn into hop-ville. It is a bit pithy here, too, plus being quite citrussy. It has some grapefruit and is piney and resiny. The hoppage really coats the palate and lingers long and hard. I wish I had bought more than one bottle; this is very solid BIPA. Prosit!

Poured today in a snifter, light head which thins out after a minute or two. This is one of the first black IPA's I've had and well worth a try. Plenty of hop flavor blended masterfully with malty goodness. I've had at least half of Camba's beers and this is definitely in the top three up there with the bourbon aged amber ale. I could drink this every day.

Picked this up at a great beer shop in Darmstadt, Germany, Maruhn Welt der Getränke. Dark brown, nearly black pour with a two finger caramel-colored head with good retention and lacing. Earthy, roasty, and hoppy nose with hints of cocoa, pine, citrus, espresso, and licorice. The taste follows suit with bold roasty coffee notes perfectly complementing the piney, citrusy, resiny hops. Hints of dark chocolate, espresso, grapefruit, licorice, and leather. The mouthfeel is thick and chewy with absolutely perfect balance and a smooth, bittersweet finish. Overall, this is hands down the best German Black IPA I've had, and right up there with my favorites in the style. Full of flavor and hugely drinkable. Highly recommended!

On at Craft Room in Zagreb Croatia. Wow. Great beer. Rich, flavorful, aromatic, smooth. Life is good with a beer like this...! Where is this beer from??! It'd compete with the very best of u.s. black ipas!

Currently #30 on Ratebeer's Top 50 Germany list. Served cold into a tulip. Purchased at Getranke Oase in Munich.

33cl bottle. Best before: 07.01.2017 (seems a bit ambitious for a Black IPA). 8.50% ABV.

Regrettably brief notes below:

HEAD: ~6cm wide. Khaki colour. Creamy and frothy. Nice even consistency. Good retention - ~8 minutes. Nice even lacing coats the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Opaque black colour. No yeast particulate/lees sediment can be seen within.

Looks appropriate for the style. It's definitely appealing, though not unique or special within its style.

AROMA: Fruity hop character. Grass. Caramel. Cotton candy sweetness. Bubblegum. Candied fruit. Some dark malt sweetness, but no overt chocolate, roasted barley, or other "dark" characteristics.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Has a nice rounded chocolate malt and dark malt sweetness, which takes the edge off any hop bitterness. Balance is always the critical element in a black IPA, and this is a rare one that gets it right. (Maybe it takes an outsider...American breweries often overhop this style). Grassy and floral hop character. Cocoa powder. A hint of buried roasted barley. A blip of cream. Toast.

TEXTURE: It may nail balance in terms of taste, but it does not do the same in terms of texture; this is way too dry, parching the palate and giving it a horse presence that really impacts drinkability negatively. Slightly overcarbonated. Aptly medium-bodied. Sufficient thickness and heft on the palate.

A creamier, softer, and more wet feel would really help this beer get to the next level.

OVERALL: Highly drinkable and very enjoyable, Black Shark is amongst the best Black IPAs I've tried if only because they get the balance right. Most examples of the style can't reconcile the hop profile with the dark malt underside, but this is a rare expression of the style that really gets it right (even if the hop profile itself isn't all that interesting; more of a piney profile would work better). This is evidence that this new wave of German breweries trying international (okay, often North American) styles isn't a complete fluke*; between Schneider Weisse's subtle incorporation of international influence (e.g. Meine Hopfenweisse, the cascade dry hopped Tap X Marie's Rendezvous) and Camba Bavaria's full-on commitment to it, it seems Bavaria remains the top German region for beer- whether traditional or "craft."

That said, there's still ample room for improvement, and this nascent style hasn't yet reached its apogee.

*I'd point to BrauKunstKeller's many failures, Schonramer's many duds, and Stone brewing's new facility opening in Berlin as examples of this phenomenon gone wrong.
