This stout has a wonderful look, feel and taste. Its black as night and gets a dark tan head, even poured from a growler. Smells malty and toasty. Some chocolate and roasted malt on the tounge. I enjoy that it isn't overly dry like some imperials. Mouthfeel is almost like an oatmeal or milk stout but they say it has neither. It's surprisingly smooth. More than medium but not thick. Like many things from HiJinX it's delicious, and hides the alcohol in surprisingly tasty ways.

Appearance is a dark chocolate brown with a thin layer of head. The head leaves some lacing on the glass, but not much considering the consistency of the froth. The nose is quite mild; there is a touch of roasted malt, but not much of a punch.

This offering certainly has a healthy full-bodied feel with a mild roasty kick. There are definitely strong hints of dark fruits in the flavor and a nicely dry finish that packs a touch more hoppiness than the normal double stout.

This is a great home brew from my home town - definitely highly recommended!

Update: Feb 21, 2014. Had a chance to sample a cask of this offering that was aged in a tequila barrel. The cask event was held at the Strange Brew Tavern in Allentown and part of Lehigh Valley Beer Week II. It did not appear that the barrel-aging added any distinct tequila notes, but the overall flavor was a touch sweeter than the standard version. I also noticed a distinct alcohol warmth on the finish that was not present in the standard version. All-in-all, this was an enjoyable one-off effort.

This poured out as an ultra thick looking black liquid. The head struggles to reach the top of the glass on this one. The retention on this one was moderate and the lacing was actually quite nice on this beer. The smell of the beer has a nice roasted aroma with a sweet malt and slightly hoppy nose. The taste of the beer has a nice bitterness with a chocolatey sweet malt flavor in there too. The mouthfeel was thick and sticky feeling. Leave a coating in the mouth. Overall this beer was pretty impressive, looking forward to having it again sometime.

Had a goblet for $6 at Liberty St. Tavern. I'm not easily impressed by double stouts like this, but it's an interesting beer. It's rich, yet not too heavy with a balance of sweet fruit to the smooth, roasted cocoa. The malt brings a mix of mocha, a little dry, dark chocolate, and a deep, but not overpowering roast. HiJinx may be a young brewery, but this is an expertly-made stout. Find yourself a glass, it makes a mighty fine nightcap.
