12 fl oz brown glass bottle with uninteresting label art and branded pry-off pressure cap acquired at my local bottle shop and served into an Independence Brewing pilsner glass in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are average. 6% ABV according to the label.

Served cold - straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a half finger wide head of white colour. Head is disappointingly thin. Lacks creaminess and fullness. Complexion and consistency are subpar, evoking a weak brew. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is subpar - about 1 minute.

Body colour is a transparent translucent yellow. The clarity is surprising given the style; I'd expect a hazy orange for a good hefeweizen. As a result, I'm a bit suspicious. Appears adequately carbonated.

Sm: Plenty of banana from the yeast. Not getting much clove though. If you're after a fruity hefeweizen, this isn't for you - I'm not finding any orange peel or lemon peel. Some citrus would really help. Wheat. It's not a very fresh or appealing aroma, and the yeast isn't as lively as I'd expect in a good hefeweizen.

No hop character or alcohol is detectable.

It's a pleasant aroma of average strength. Far from unique or special for a hefeweizen. This aroma doesn't hold a candle to that of the best traditional offerings in the style (or even to the best Texan hefeweizens for that matter).

T: Banana, bubblegum, wheat. Those three notes are the core of the beer. There's no clove, citrus peel, etc. Maybe some floral hop character?

No alcohol or yeast character (aside from the banana esters) is detectable. Simplicity has always been at the heart of this style, but this lacks the masterful balance and careful subtlety of the best beers in the style, and feels boring and bland in comparison. It's very by-the-numbers, and never feels gestalt. I do like it, though. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

Mf: Smooth, wet, slightly overcarbonated, thin, and refreshing - though it does have a slight bite. Okay presence on the palate. The texture doesn't feel tailored specifically to the taste. Could be softer.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, rough, or astringent.

Dr: A forgettable hefeweizen from Pedernales. I see no need to pick this up again, and wouldn't recommend it to friends or trade partners. It's a decent offering for when you're in the mood for a hefeweizen and can't find anything else, but there are far better beers in this style that don't cost much more. Meh.

Ultimately, the overcarbonation is the biggest thing holding this beer back because it really impedes drinkability.

Pours a completely clear golden yellow flavor. There is a trace of dark sediment in the bottle, but it doesn't stir up even after three or four pours. Slight fruity aroma with a long nose of spice. Quite sharp and spritzy on the tongue with some club soda taste.

At first sip, this is so light I thought it was the American Wheat. However, it soon opens up into a strong clove taste with a bitter spice aftertaste. Fruity flavors of peach nectar and finally some banana in the nose. Quite a fragrant, perfumey flavor that ends with a bitter and even earthy taste. This is clean and drinkable, but it is not a very good example of the style.

On tap at the Phoenix Saloon in New Braunfels.

Served with a slice of lemon. The beer pours a hazy straw color with a white head. The aroma is full of banana and grain with some wheat thrown in. The flavor is heavy on the banana notes. There is some wheat and grain, but very little in the way of cloves. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

12 oz bottle courtesy of fthomasl pours a lightly hazed gold color with an uncharacteristically fast-fading white head that barely has time to leave a few smidges of lace.

Nose is pretty good - cloves, banana and bubblegum. Good, clasic hefe aroma.

Taste is a little thin, the sweet wheat body is not there. Has a nice yeast flavor but just not enough of it. Pretty watery. Drinkable with a few nice characteristics but overall a sub-par hefeweizen.

This is an excellent here. I would say Live Oak Hefe is better, but this gives it a run for its money.
