Poured from bottle into 16 oz tulip. Aggressive pour yielded a nice 2 finger tan head. Puppy disappeared pretty quickly leaving a little ring around the edges. Very dark beer, little to no light passes thru it, color is more darkish brown. Smells of roasted malt, hint of chocolate and coffee. More of a malt driven beer, and it isn't bad for that. Getting some caramel, toffee to the taste, some chocolate on the back end. I like this beer, have passed it up for a while, but won't do that again. My favorite of this style is negra modelo, and this one is that with a little personality.

Pedernales Brewing Company "Lobo Negro"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating
$4 @ Auslander Restaurant, Fredericksburg, TX

Interesting beer. It doesn't actually say what style it is on the label, and I don't know that I would call it a Munich dunkel. It's quite chocolatey in the nose with a slight coffee-like roasted edge, and that carries over into the flavor along with some caramel and light nuttiness. It's more malty, and I guess chocolatey, than I'd expect of a dunkel but that doesn't change the fact that it's a great beer. If there's a flaw to it, and I don't really think there is, it's that it's pretty much the same straight through. Of course that rich, chocolatey-coffee character isn't bad, and it's not sweet but it kind of suggests that in its maltiness. Nicely done. A satiating dark and malty beer that's quite drinkable.

Undated bottle at 43 degrees into snifter
Aroma of lightly roasted malt, chocolate (?), lasts the entire glass
Head average (three cm, aggressive pour), light brown, creamy with a few rocks, diminishing to irregular two to five mm ring and partial layer which lasts
Lacing poor – few small islands of tiny bubbles
Body dark brown, opaque
Flavor weak, some dark maltiness; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, watery, soft carbonation

I have never had this style but it was pretty good. It tasted a lot like a slightly bitter milk stout. Not bad.

Black with see thru ruby pour; dark beige head; thick lace to start. Lightly roasted malt nose. Lite malt start but a little syrupy on the finish. Light mouthfeel. Light and easy to drink.

Pours out a dark nutty brown with a solid head. Smells of clean yeast, dark malts, and roasted/toasted malts. Tastes like mocha, caramel, and toffee with a clean yeast. Foamy carbonation with a medium-light body. This is a tasty dark lager.

L: Pours a deep dark brown with nice clarity when you hold it up to the light. Mahogany hues around the edges. A one finger slightly tan head rises to the rim of the glass.

S: immediately notice the presence of molasses, roasted malts, and chocolate.

T: Pumpernickel bread crust, molasses, bitter dark chocolate, and hints of roasted malts in the taste. There's even something reminiscent of root beer. Balanced and drinkable. Comes

F: Not too bitter, deliciously creamy. Medium body with medium carbonation.

O: This beer is great, and I wish more American brewers would try their hand at Munich Dunkel Lagers because there's a lot of room to play with these flavors and experiment. Until then, seek out Lobo Negro when you are in Texas.

Very good Dunkel, they have great water quality and that really enhances the taste of this beer. I enjoy it for lighter beer.
