I wasn't planning on stopping by, but while walking along the HR waterfront, I noticed Pfriem just there, and on my way back, I had to stop in to check them out.

Straw yellow, dense whit head with very nice lacing. Nose is fruity and spicy. More a blend of saison and tripel, there's honey, fruit, a little sulfur. Fruit character is light citrus with a hint of pine. Palate opens a blend of overbearing sweetness and moderate bitterness. Spicy, phenolic, boozy, fruit juice, this is overdone, as most big saisons are. Yeast character is mostly spice and a little sulfur. Sweet and bitter on finish with honey, fruit and alcohol, this is disappointing.

Frothy pale golden brew with a long-lasting white foam in the Kasteel chalice. So sudsy and creamy in the mouth. Light body and slightly sharp on the tongue. Fruity aroma with an inviting whiff of alcohol.

Wheaty and toasted malt flavored. Here the yeasty bitterness is just right for the bold flavor and the dose of alcohol. An exuberant but refined strong beer. Full of aromatics. Flavors of white cake batter, maybe a little vanilla.

This is simply delicious. I just wonder why more skilled brewers don't spend some R&D time on exploring the Saison universe. Another outstanding brew from pFriem. From the 375 ml bottle purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham, Washington for six bucks.

on-tap, brouwers

Sharp looking brew - hazy straw body, big foamy head. Lots of yeasty notes, spicy esters, grass, ginger, corriander, bright citrus hops. Another very tasty brew from Pfriem - they seem really dialed in at brewing yeast-forward belgian styles. Look forward to much more from them.

Light golden copper with a huge head that slowly recedes. Smells of banana bread and cotton candy. Taste is well balanced and follows the nose with the addition of some citrus fruit as well. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy. Really awesome saison.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a hazy, light straw with gold tints and a sturdy one finger white head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma has surprising lemony Belgian yeast, ripe tropical fruit, light clove. Flavor is also unexpected, with estery tropical and citrus fruit, exotic phenols, Belgian yeast, coriander. Finishes with spicy fruit and light pepper. Medium bodied with active carbonation, good mouth feel. Unusual fruit flavors that work well together and spiced nicely with Belgian style spicing. Reminds me a hybrid between a dry saison and a Belgian tripel. This has the same interesting interplay between starting sweet, but showing dryness near the finish, revealing different flavors. As a saison, rather idiosyncratic, but fits loosely in the style. As a Belgian oriented farmhouse style ale, quite interesting with excellent and off-beat fruit flavors. I liked this a lot and hope to revisit this often. Lightly warming in the finish, but the ABV is covered by the rich flavors. This brewery continues to surprise; I'm impressed when they pull off a bit of a different twist on a style, but it turns out very enjoyable.

Poured from 375mL corked & caged bottle into my Fremont tulip.

Appearance: light golden hue with a light haze and a moderate effervescence. Head poured a finger of frothy white foam which left a lightly chunky lace as it dissipated. Not too bad!

Smell: green and grassy aroma with a light pear character and just a touch of funk. Kind of like somewhere between a saison and a tripel -- I quite like it.

Taste: quite a bit like the aroma with good tripel-type character and a dash of the farmhouse. The grassy hops are here, too, which I dig. My only issue is that the alcohol heat is a bit strong, but otherwise quite delicious.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a gargantuan carbonation and a big, mouth-filling creaminess. Shazam!

Overall: I like this beer a lot, but the alcohol heat really starts to impact drinkability. D'oh!

Huge two finger head. Belgian yeast on the nose. Taste is sharp cloves, citrus peels, and a hint of banana. More belgian triple than a saison. The alcohol is well hidden showing up after you sip. This is one hell of a mouth watering beer bitter and sweet.
