On tap at the brewery. Typical west coast IPA.

pFriem IPA

A: Pfriem's IPA pours brassy gold, a little low on carbonation, and crystal clear. It is capped with a snowy head of about a finger and a half that quickly dissipates. Lacing is nice, though a little spotty, even if the retention leaves something to be desired. The color is a bit lighter than other IPAs, likely indicating a lesser malt bill and a decidedly West Coast take on the style. Clarity is what this has going for it. 3.5/5

A: There is not much going on here, actually. Minor grapefruit and pine, lemon zest, and a little candied orange. Crisp, crackery malt, and there is no real yeast character to speak of. Seems like a very toned down version of the classic West Coast IPA, which is disappointing. It is not outright bad, however. 3/5

T: The taste is an improvement on the smell, but does not tread any new ground or do anything particularly well. Again, classic West Coast notes of grapefruit, orange pith and rind, and pine. Some grassiness and candied orange come in toward the end. A little malt sweetness makes an appearance with some lemon. Finally, a prominent bitterness cuts in, powerful enough to completely dry the mouth out and leave nothing but a hint of citrus rind. This is slightly above average but nothing more. 3.25/5

M: Like the rest of the beer, this is middling. It is medium on the tongue, slightly creamy, and with moderate-high astringency. It leaves the mouth very dry. Carbonation is low for the style. Serviceable, but the carbonation hurts it. 3.25/5

O: This was a disappointment. PFriem is a very good brewery, but this could easily be an IPA from a much lesser brewery. There is nothing special about this in any way. It is acceptable, but in the Pacific Northwest, it should basically never be drank due to the plethora of better options. This one just gets lost in the shuffle, but do not pass up on other PFriem brews. Pair with Top 40. 2.75/5

Rating: just drink it
Price: $$

Look, I'm not a huge IPA person and this one definitely nods to it's west coast hops roots, but overall very drinkable, the hops are well balanced and I would drink k it again. Just make sure you have something to eat with it!

Beautiful beer, true to form, but unique, with a technique and execution you come to expect from Pfriem. I live in a world where this is my "go to" IPA at the supermarket? Spoiled. I'll enjoy this beer til the end of days.

Bottled on 07 30 15. Elegantly designed 500mL bottle served in a tapered pint glass. Beer is pale golden in color, with great clarity, and forms a really nice white head. Really nice green, floral aroma. The main thing I notice about the taste of this beer is that it's really smooth drinking -- I don't know the actual IBU count, but there's not a lot of bitterness here. There are, however, a lot of piny, citrusy, and tropical fruit (passionfruit/pineapple) flavors here. I expected more DIPA-type bitterness from a 7.2% IPA from an Oregon brewery.

Great flavor; great beer.

on-tap @ Collins

Pfriem was the buzz-brewery a few months back and I'm still working through some of the standards, this being the least enjoyable. Not sure of the hops on this one, but a bit big-bodied, dirty hop profile, spicy. Just OK - like the blonde and belgian IPA's a bit more
