Funky, Crackery, Fruity, Vinous

A healthy pop of the cork yields a golden and lively beer with a touch of haze and a billowy foam head. Slight funk and a dusting of fresh pale malts stand out in the otherwise clean nose. Soft, smooth, and creamy with a light crispness. Dry, crackery malt character. Spicy phenols, some pepper and a medicinal note meld with a mild sweetness that has hints of tropical fruitiness, white grapes and unripened banana. A vinous quality is noticeable throughout. Yeasty, and semi-astringent in the finish. Reminiscent of a classic, straight-up, dry Saison. I dig it.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #114 (July 2016).

Chunky out of the bottle but great carbonation. Batch brewed 4.19.16. Darker than your avg saison , but damn good mouth taste and feel. Would love to compare this to the draft version.

I wish I could rate the packaging because this is the best looking corked & caged bottle and label I think I have ever seen on a beer, and I'm a bottle collector 5.00. Pours a nice creamy looking white head and cloudy strew yellow with slight amount of settlement 4.50. Smells perfect for this style 4.50. Very complex taste, unusual thick full body but also light at the same time. Hard to describe. I taste vanilla, ginger, thyme and some slight lemon. It ends with a pleasant dry sour finish. 4.25. Overall this is an exceptional Saison. Highly recommend 4.50

From a 16 oz bottle to a tulip: yellow, transparent. Rather thin head, dissipates quickly. Impressive bouquet: grassy, herbal. Taste follows. Excellent lingering herbal aftertaste; little bit of heat. Really well done saison!

Nice dry traditional saison. Hazy straw colour, nice fluffy white head. Nose is fruity esters and light malt. Taste is dry, very classic and true to the style. I'd gladly drink it again.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a hazy, very light straw yellow with a two finger white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of light citrus, mildly bready malt, saison yeast, apple and pear juice, clove, lightly earthy. Flavor starts with orange family citrus, light lemon, saison yeast, clove and mild grassy hops, then takes a quick curve into astringently bitter spicy and bone dry finish. Light bodied with excellent peppery carbonation. A classic dry saison with nicely balanced fruit and grain flavors to start. A bit too dry and starkly bitter in the finish for my taste, but I enjoyed the flavor progression. The start is very nice and enjoyable and this could be a regular saison for me with little more balance between the base flavors and the finish.

I originally rated this in November 2014, gave it a 3.2 overall and said this: "Surprisingly bitter on the finish for a saison. Doesn't seem to me to fit the style, or at least to fit the kinds of saisons that I like." This rating was from a bottle.

This is an update from May 23 2016. I had it on tap at the brewery, and had a completely different reaction. I thought it was a perfectly good saison, well within the normal range of the style. It didn't have a bitter finish at all. Just a classic saison, slightly spicy, good funk.

I don't know whether I got a bad bottle a couple of years ago or what.
