Dark brown hue.

Tan head; almost no lace.

Red wine & mild chocolate nose.

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Tart cherry up front; mild chocolate finish. Not super complex but well-done.

This is a great sour-ish stout with a nice malty, roasted base and sour front. Stout like aspects are mostly on the finish.

Body is slightly more carbonated than I want but works with the air quality off the beer.

Color is a cross between brown ale and oud bruin than black like a stout. A little ugly, but the bottle is very pretty

2010 Vintage poured into a room temp snifter.

A: Pours a dark chocolate brown with a lofty khaki head that slowly settles into a medium layer that maintains throughout and laces nicely.

S: Very complex! Notes of chocolate and coffee battle with hops and roast, along with peppery tones reminiscent of yeasty phenols.

T: Equally complex. Chocolate, vanilla, chai tea and are all over the place, and bittersweet chocolate settles on the palate.

M: Medium-bodied with a tight carbonation that doesn't quite scrub the palate. leaving a little thickness on the tongue.

O: A very complex beer with a little ambiguous sweetness, possibly from it's old vintage. Many of the flavors and aromas are enjoyable, but are so complex as to detract from the overall drinking experience as they don't settle in. Not bad at all, but hard to relax and drink.

Pored from 11,2 oz bottle into a goblet, vintage is 2012.
A - Translucent, hickory colored, a thin veil caps this offering with support from a gently rising
champagne size spheres.
S - As soon as the swing top popped, dark tea nose was evident, add anise, cocoa, mint, wet cedar plank.
and mature blackberry waiting to be picked. Oddly no vanilla notes, a boozy ester rises as the beer warms.
Abbey ale, Quad elements abound. Exceedingly complex.
T - Vinous, aged grape skin, strong Assam black tea. Interestingly fruity, dark fruits, plum, and fresh fig.
There is a sweet almost off putting component that accumulates with each sip. Surprisingly there is a resonating hop presence.
M - This in body, syrupy, the coating is complete across the palate, with time the finish is 180 deg, super dry. A byproduct of the Tea maybe. The underside of the tongue bears the brunt of this offering,
O - What a wonderful challenge this beer from BFM is. Rich in aromatics, challenging in the feel and the flavors. Deceiving in the connection between the nose and the palate in the best ways. Quite the treat.

330ml bottle from Drinks of the World, Basel (7.50 CHF):
A very surprising take on an imperial stout with a lot more hops than expected led by some excellent pine & grapefruit plus a few background fruits balanced against roasted malts & a chocolate base. The beer went down a lot easier than I should have & is definitely one I'd like to try again, if only it was available nearer me.

An interesting imp. stout brewed with pepper and tea. Aroma is lots of tea and malt. Look is nice with great tan head and awesome lacing. Taste is slight with pepper and tea and balances ok with the imperial stout flavor that you would expect. Not awesome, but very very good

(batch 2013 - poured into a Chouffe tulip)

L: yeast smoo all over the bottle lip and stopper... really compact, creamy tan foam... black liquid... the sud pad does take a couple minutes to recede but, once it's gone, only a thin collar and some weak threads of lace are left over

S: old coffee grounds, champagne... chocolate syrup... yeast character has a 'trappist' bent to it, in a bacterial way... touch of piss pants... medium-strong potency overall...

T: chocolate/coffee liqueur without cream and finishing with a lean wash of clean, tonic alcohol... mild sweetness, burnt sugar... the booze cuts through the middle with a little acidity on the back end... the bottle conditioning lends a decidedly Belgian tone... bit of espresso and an almost cola flavor in the aftertaste

F: perhaps a little surprising at how tight and slick the viscosity is up front... definitely a hot whoosh at the back, and it fades slow, but it's far from unpleasant... about medium-full bodied, but slick, slightly sticky and flat... this is not something you want to be knocking back toward the end of a night of drinking though - I'm certain the booze is all you will feel

O: pleasant degree of dirty richness to the malt, and the alcohol is kickin'... the recipe seems fairly simple, which is alright, however, the taste will not etch itself into your mind's beer bank... a brewery like BFM needs diversity, though, and this is a welcome entry into their portfolio... looking again at the label, I didn't really pick up the vanilla and tea, but perhaps some traces of the black pepper...

Pours an extremely dark brown with a good head of tan foam. Lacing is okay.

I get notes of spicy pepper and what seems like a fruity tartness.

Peppery for sure. Some roasted malt, bitter chocolate, vanilla. overall tastes, I can only describe as rough.

Full bodied with great carbonation.

Strange taster of the style. Doesn't exactly hit my palate right.

You can't tell a book by its cover, and you can't judge a beer by the name on its label. I enjoyed this beer, but it's more like a Belgian strong ale than a stout. A little spicy, slightly roasty, a little tartness in the finish. Mouthfeel is way too thin for an Imperial stout, and there's too much carbonation. Very drinkable though, and the high ABV is well hidden. I would have rated this one higher if it was in a more appropriate category.

Poured from a cask at the Allen Street Pub in Albany, NY. Delicious at the warmer temperature!! With a liquor-like taste and texture, it definitely lingers on the palate longer but leaves you wanting another sip that much sooner. However, at 10.3%, be warned!

Listed as a sour at Pangaea in Sacramento . Understandable that it is hard to categorize this one but a stout it is not . Interesting to try once but I would not go back to this well again .

Poured an almost black color, probably dark brown, with minimal head and lace. Spicy, roasted malt aroma dominates my nose and there is a little bit of sweetness.
Medium bodied, smooth, almost chewy at times,, there is a vanilla like sweetness to beer while maintaining a roasted, almost coffee dry malt base and that spiciness and flavor profile which must be the tea leaves (assuming they brewed with actual tea leaves). Finishes with a spicy edge and crispness that belies the heaviness and booziness of beer.

Look: Opaque, black, even against sunlight. Bright head that just lasts in the glass until you took the last sip.

Smell: Surprised to smell floral aromas. Reminds me more of an IPA than a stout. Chocolate and malt.

Taste: IPAish, floral taste with a lot of dark chocolate and malt kicking in soon after. Lovely bitterness.

Feel: Nice carbonation, but mouth feel could be improved.

Overall: An interesting, deep Imperial Stout that should please the IPA as well as the Stouts connaisseur alike.

A- Nice chocolate brown with a large two finger almond colored head. Chunky brown lacing `
S- Smell is slightly sour, malty and spicy.
T- Smooth pungent and slightly cheesy. Has a really deep flavor profile, toasted malt and vanilla, it has some smoke and sweet to it and everything just melds together.
M- The mouth feel is super smooth and thick, slides over the tongue and doesn’t coat the mouth. Little to no carbonation.
O- Really enjoyable and drinkable beer. The flavors are so different than what I’m used to for a stout. The flavors run deep and there is a lot of thought and talent behind this beer. Delightful

Black color, fantastic, long lasting beige head.

Earthy aromas of black coffee, tobacco, bready malts, hints of burned toffee and even floral hops.

Flavor is defined by an unique vinous touch, which creates a little confusion on the palate at first, but notes of caramel and toffee lure into a slick, smooth experience, absorbed by bitter chocolate, black pepper and wood. Roasted malt and coffee notes lead to a long bitter finish, which gets softened by a spicy vanilla touch. Despite of all the different flavors, the beer’s body doesn’t actually remind me of an imperial stout, but has a perfect balance of all those sublte flavors, which get coated up in a very pleasant way.

This pours a very dark and has a nice tone of deep ruby redness that only reveals itself when held to a bright light. The head is a tick, rich and very long lived with a texture reminiscent of memory foam. The lacing is very fine and consistent

The nose is very imperial with a sour overtone that blends with alcohol, bread, smoked malt, chocolate, ginger and coffee.

The taste is a sweet malty experience that fades to a complex alcohol based experience. The fruitiness and alcohol combine for a surprisingly effective base to build flavors of bread, raisins, chocolate, coffee and cherries.

The moutfeel is rich and settles fully across the palate.

Overall this is a very good example of what is an Imperial Stout..

I purchased this not all that long ago at Hunger-n-Thirst while Mughugger was working in the bottle shop. I really had no immediate plans to drink it, but this afternoon has become "Russia at Chez Wody" and I am not only not apologizing for it, but I am advancing in the face of the enemy!

From the bottle: "Batch 2013"; "Jurassian Imperial Stout brewed with Black Pepper, Vanilla & Tea"; "Extremely Complex"; "This Cuvee was created in the honor of the Jurassian revolutionist Alex Le Rouge. Enjoy this wonderful Cuvee at about 10-12 Celcius (50-53 F), with a crunch of bitter chocolate or a Cigar. Cuvee Alex Le Rouge can be sequestrated for a few years in a cellar."

No cigars for this asthmatic and since I don't really dig chocolate, I am flying solo on this mission. Man, the bottle top with its rubber gasket really popped open with aloud "Pop!" I sat back, awaiting a gusher or some other sort of malfeasance, yet nothing. Hmmm. Looking into the open neck felt like staring into the barrel of a loaded revolver. I was nervous, but unwavering. I gave it a gentle pour and still came up with a finger of deep-tan head with limited retention. Nose smelled more like a Saison than an RIS! The black pepper was huge as was an earthy mustiness, perhaps from the the tea, perhaps from the yeast, maybe from both. Color was a cola-brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) and garnet highlights. This is a Russian?!? I laugh in the face of Yuri Dimitrov if that is the case! Russian Tea Room? Ha! Mouthfeel was medium and danced across my tongue, unlike today's predecessors, who marched along in their hobnailed boots, unwavering in their single mindedness. This was like drinking strong black tea with gunpowder, which I have done, but it does not strike fear into my heart. Warming, I was getting a fusel alcohol burn, and a light chocolatiness, but where was the Oooomph!?! No wonder that they wanted me to have dark chocolate and/or a cigar - it/they might have hidden the fact that this Czar wore no clothes. Finish was that of an RIS on "Mute". If I were to sequester one, it would be under Abu Grahib conditions, away from prying eyes where I could torture it endlessly until it became something worthy of my time.

Poured at the wonderful Duckworth's - Park Rd - Charlotte, NC... all drafts $3.50 today!

It pours very dark brown with little to no head or lacing. The nose is toasty - pleasant to look at and smell, but the taste is a letdown - especially after the amazing brews I recently tried by them in VA @ Mekong. It's thinner than an imperial stout should be - very much a flat cola thing going on. It won't sour me on this brewery.

A - Pours light brown w/ a golden reddish hue. Almost like root beer. Little head which dissipates quickly, and no lacing.
S - My favorite part of this beer. Lots of sour cherry and oak aroma. There's some earth and farmhouse funk in there as well. Maybe a hint of vanilla, but no black pepper or tea aroma.
T - Sweet dark fruits up front transform to an acidic tart cherry finish. Faint hop bitterness present in the aftertaste. Can't say I taste any vanilla, black pepper, or tea.
M - Not much carbonation or body in this one. It was a 2009 bottle. I'm not sure if that had an effect on the mouthfeel.
O - This beer was not what I expected, and I feel like it's mislabeled as an Imperial Stout. However, I really like the beer itself. It reminded me a lot of a flanders red. Kinda a beginners sour beer. Enjoyed trying this beer, but I would not pay the steep price for another bottle.

very different take here, imperial stout with vanilla, tea, and pepper. have not had too much swiss beer either, so i was pumped for this. the pour is much lighter than the style norm, almost glowing red instead of black. it has a settling half inch of tan head and some really coagulated yeast bits the look rather nasty at the bottom of my wine glass. the nose smells like berries, tart ones, like cranberries, or wild yeast, definitely dont get the big bitter roasted barley here. i get vanilla in the flavor, but the contributions of the tea and pepper are less noticeable. some chocolate from the malt provides the base and a wild ale yeast cleans up a thick tart fruity finish. definitely an odd interpretation of the style, but its mostly successful, with the alcohol being well hidden and the fruit and yeast flavors being more central than they usually are in a big stout. the yeast pieces in the dregs are a little gross, but thats irrelevant in this really dynamic and delicious brew. rich and yummy, i need to try more from these guys, but man do they get expensive.

A: Pitch black.

S: Light and grainy.

T: Lots of malt with a bit of a black coffee feel. Watery, eh.

M: Coarse.

O: Not one with big stout flavors. It has a weird body for a stout and doesn't deliver on a full body. Too thin and coarse of a liquid.

The beer pours in an almost black color with no head.

The aroma is a bit boring of some leather, some roasty notes, and a strange off chocolate. A bit of spice. Not much sweetness in there.

The flavor follows again with a lack of roasted malt, some coffee and chocolate. There's certainly some muted vanilla with a tea dryness on the end.

The body is super watery for this big of a beer and it lacked any carbonation.

A really disappointing beer and really pushes how an imperial stout can be done so very wrong.

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Sure, this bottle made my jaunt to Chevy Chase a bit more expensive than I anticipated, but it just sounded so good... Anyway, this stuff pours a deep onyx topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises blackstrap molasses, roasted malts, light acrid coffee, mild anise, faint hints of various dark fruits, and a light wisp of smoke billowing around every now and again. The taste brings in more of the same, with a bit more of a fruity component (not enough to make things all that strange, though) and a new vein of what seems like tea. The body is a hefty medium, with a rather light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, a very nice stout, one that makes me wanna seek out more from this brewery, despite the seemingly higher pricetags.

Poured as part of the "We Want the Funk" flight at Trappist Provisions from a 22oz bottle into a 6oz wine glass. Consumed "05/08/13." Review is from my notes.

Pours a blackened, nearly opaque color with a greyish head that immediately gives this the appearance of cold mocha brew. There's a surprising amount of bubbles that glide to the top and that remind me that this is indeed a beer, in spite of the viscous, nearly fortified wine looking appearance. Alcohol legs are huge on this one. In a way, almost looks like a puréed plum drink, if it were not for the alcohol and carbonation. Just like other beers from BFM, looks great.

The aroma is chock filled with many flavors that gives this an odd yet surprisingly fascinating profile overall. There's an immediate tinge of plums and raisins that is followed by a soured, woody, vinous profile, and then immediately melds into roasted cocoa, vanilla, light floral notes, tea, and dried leaves. The soured flavor lingers on, and with the wood resembles tobacco or a slightly leathery flavor. Very earthy overall, yet filled with a combo of ripe and faded tannins from the malts, wood, and delicate yet highly mineral-like hop profile. Very refreshing, not too explosive, and integrated to the point of holding interest in the long run.

The flavor is immediately soured plums combined with an earthy, slightly smoky flavor imparted from the wood. Then, these flavors become slightly more tarty and meld with leather, cherries, Port wine-like fortified flavors, and a crisp yet juicy dark malty bready finish. Alcohol is well hidden, but the sweetness is undeniably there. The soured juiciness of the fruits, as well as the light chocolate, black tea, and leafy flavors are all very well integrated, and allow each other space in the long run. Carbonation is good, as indicated from the very beginning. The finish is very long lasting, and while tarty, it does not induce salivation by any means. Not a chore to drink at all - very complex but well assembled.

BFM really shows here how a barrel aged soured stout should be made. Dark fruit forward, slightly roasted, tart and crisp, filled with tannins that slowly open up in a long aftertaste, and ultimately, balance that makes this drinkable for pretty much any occasion. I think this beer deserves more love than it's been getting here. This is not a style that is common by any means, but it's one that I'm starting to enjoy more as they turn out this way.

Weird beer. The bottle says it's a 2009 batch. This means the beer could possibly be four years old at this point. I don't have much experience with aging beers so I can't really comment how this really effects the beer. It mostly makes me second guess everything.

Overall I liked it. Smell is pretty sour (vinegar-ish). And the sourness comes over in taste as well, but it's clearly not a intended to be marketed like a sour. I attribute it to the tea adjuncts. Malts are strong in the after taste. The alcohol is noticeable but tasteful.

Carbonation is off. It poured odd, like water. Mouthfeel is where it's lacking. Too sticky.

Not going to buy this again, but I liked trying it. I'm a sucker for pop-top bottles.
