Brown with lots of red highlights, this beer is completely opaque as it's extremely thick and murky. The off-white head isn't much more than a short layer of bubbling that does achieve some spotting.
Wow. This beer is all about some acidity, funk and sourness. I guess it hits it's mark, as I imagine those are the three aspects the brewers had hoped to showcase. It practically makes the nostrils pucker (if they could), and the mouth absolutely does. There's lots of vinegar, some apple cider but more balsamic, against the backdrop of sweet ripened dark fruits. It's got some red wine character, tannins and a vinous quality, too. I didn't know it was barreled at first (not knowing what it was), but lots of wood comes out with vanilla. Also alonng for the ride are an earthy spice, raw lemon juice, horseblanket, and something like allspice, mostly on the tongue. It takes some time to reach through the complexities. There is a biting sting from the high acidity, and it seems to get a little too harsh. The alcohol is pretty well masked, though.
The acidic dryness hits the feel, of course, but it's very interesting for the palate to attempt to assimilate. It does bite, hard, but the dryness on the roof of the mouth and the sourness scraping the tongue are fun in their own way. Carbonation is on the lower end and crispness is soft but consistent.

Bottle bought and drank at Victoire in Rochester, NY.

Barrel aged barleywines aren't what they used to be. What the fuck was this monstrosity of a beer? I don't mind sour beers if they are done well, but this was just rancid.

2011 vintage. Please make this the last vintage. Don't make it again. Plz.

Pours fairly still and murky honey brown, with no head or lacing.

Smells like vinegar, tobacco, pickle juice, leather, and death.

The taste is similar, just atrocious. What is going on here? This is billed as a rum barrel aged rye barleywine. There is absolutely nothing here to suggest any of the flavors one would assume would be in a rum BA barleywine. Tastes like pickle juice, vinegar, old feet, with maybe the slightest touch of wood. Maybe this was sort of good when it was released, but at this point, it's a muddled, offensive mess of a beer.

Medium bodied, not at all drinkable, no carbonation. I couldn't finish the bottle.

Please stay away from this beer, I beg of you.

this beer is pretty bad. i drink a ton of wild ales and sours, and even though this is made by some heavy hitters, and has been carefully aged and all, and even is a really cool recipe probably, the execution is just piss poor. its rankly sour, vinegar and lemony and off. the rye is faded and stale, and there is zero carbonation. i mean, this isnt belgian lambic here. red rusty color, lots of yeast bits, and not a single bubble to be found. a nose of stale grain, sweet leftover sugar, and infected acidity. have not had a nose this off really since the paradox stuff that was just so infected and offensive. it still has hope though, until i taste it, and i get the acid all up front, totally covering up any success that may exist in the mash or in the flavoring. no rye at all, some rum or bourbon wood, but its all lost to aggressive lactic acidity that cant possibly be palatable to anyone who drinks sours on a regular basis, its just so far off the mark. what i like about it (albeit not very much), is how weird it is. i can see the potential here, hopefully mine aged poorly or something, but i can see how this could be awesome in a different manifestation. woody and strong, clever. for a bottle that lists abv percentage out the the ten thousandths place, i mean, if we are being that exact here, how can the beer be so sloppy? i know they have an awesome reputation, but so far i am zero for two with these guys. 17 bucks a go for this? no thanks.

This was so very unique. A sour rye barley wine. I love sours and bw, can't wait. It poured a murky deep reddish brown in typical barleywine style, but more appropriate to a sour, no carbonation. Like none. Smells tart but there are definite notes of raisin and molasses. The impact on my tastebuds was similar to biting into a lemon, soo very tart. Really can't find much vinegar. The molasses and raisin come through in the end, hard to prevail over such sourness, but it adds a unique mouthfeel that doesn't really require carbonation. So interesting. Not the most incredible flavors or colors, but what a beer.

Appearance: really dark brown and opaque, like prune juice. No foam or any lacings.

Smell: Very funky. Also picked up a bit of raisins and prunes. Not getting much of oak or aromas associated with barrel aging.

Taste: Clearly does not taste like a barely wine. Has a intense vinegary tartness. Unfortunately I do not know if this is intentional or it's full blown infected. I do not taste any rum or oak from the barrels. It does have a nice bitter finish that goes melds well with the tartness but once again, I do not know what the intentional flavors of this beer is.

Mouthfeel: no carbonation in this beer. There is some body but really nothing spectacular. No warmth from the alcohol either, kind of weird considering it's 10% ABV.

Overall: I'm trying to like it but once again not sure if this is infected or not. It's sour and I did not expect this. It did not indicate anywhere on the bottle that this would present some serious funk.I also have to add that if I knew this was going to be sour, I might have enjoyed this a lot more (then I wouldn't be debating if the current flavors are intentional or not).

A: Pours a dark reddish brown with a very small amount of head, and what is there dissipates to nothing, leaving no lacing.

S: Sweet and sour malt, with notes of sour cherry and honey.

T: Sour, but balanced by the significant sweetness. The slightly boozy syrupy note coats the inside of the mouth, with a sour note digging out the center.

M: Full body, very low carbonation.

Overall, interesting, but I'm not sure I'd really recommend it, and I wouldn't seek it out again. It's certainly still worth a try if you are interested in something unique.

Sour Barleywine. You just don't see that everyday. But as the "imperialized" status of Terrapin meets the "wild and funky" flare of BFM, something crazy is about to go down!

While the beer pours nothing like expected, its non-carbonated stillness allows the ale to settle into the snifter with an appearance that looks like a mix of dark red wine and prune juice. A quick swirl delivers classic brandy-type legging on the glass instead of the common foamy lace. Dark, tawny and murky- the ale is rustic and mysterious even to the eye.

Olfactory piercing aromas attack the nose with vengeance. Balsamic vinegar, black cherries, dates, figs, prunes, limes and red grapes all add to the tangy but dark, dried and aged fruit. Its leathery aroma invites other funky notes of sea air, weathered oak, cork, horse hair, musty attic wood and cellar-like pungency. Its a challenging vinous, tart and savory combination that's highly intimidating.

Its first sip zings right to the jowls and forces immediate mouthwatering sensations with its acute sourness. A mixture of balsamic and white wine vinegar is winy, acidic and highly fruity. A glimpse of fruit sweetness props up the sourness with all those dehydrated and stone fruits of the nose- its savory prune and date combination is the perfect complement to the black cherry, salty and umami rich and savory tones. Something akin to soy sauce leaps out and pulls the mature fruit and sourness together seamlessly. Its limey, briny, woody flavors finish the taste with a kiss of spiced dark rum.

The sourness pangs on the soft tissues of the mouth like a drum. As the mouth continues to water, the beer's jaw-stabbing astringency feels like splinters as the high alcohol warmth and the sheer acidity hammers away on the taste buds without apologies. That combination is palate-stripping as it leaves the mouth like dry vermouth.

There are very few glimpses that tell me that this beer is a Barleywine. But its sheer alcoholic power and thin sweetness is all that's left after that high sourness is done.
