On tap at Birch in Norfolk:

Superb tasting and mouthfeel. Despite the ABV, it still feels smooth and slightly spicy. One of the best I've had in this style. You know you've done a good thing when you've added to a fellow beer-drinkewr's vocabulary in "Biere de Garde." A good thing.

Pours a hazy medium brown with copper highlights and minimal cream head that dissipates to nothing.

Balsamic vinegar, lactic acid, oak, vanilla, caramel sweetness, and red wine must form the initial aroma, with a bit of rogue yeast funk. Definite wine character, with sharp fruit notes of cherry and dark berries. Smells fabulous!

Decidedly sour and tart, the flavor lacks the sweetness promised in the aroma, finishing somewhat dry, oaky, and toasted. There's significant malt backbone, but the alcohol is incredibly masked. Balsamic vinegar, a bit of phenolic barnyard funk, caramel, and a hint of nuttiness add complexity. Can't believe this is 11%. Tart cherries longer throughout.

Body is moderate and smooth, with minimal carbonation and slight alcohol warmth.

Very complex. The nutty malt presence interacts brilliantly with toasted oak, and the yeast funkiness plays so well with the wine characteristics. This one could easily sneak up on you!

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer is dark ruby to auburn in color with a small, bubbly head.

The aroma is bold and complex, offering booze, grapes, oak, funk, lacto and acetic presence, bourbon, tart fruit, syrup. Wow.

The flavor is assertive and complex. The grappa seems to come through more than the other barrels. The beer leads off with an alcoholic sweetness and prominent liquor, then finishes with a tart and sour combo. Cherry presence, even cherry cough syrup, in the best possible way. This beer runs the gamut of flavor profiles.

Sticky and palate coating. A beer to sip and savor.

I could have sipped this all night, but alas, one snifter was all I could manage on this occasion. i would definitely have / buy this again. Recommended.

Had on tap at churchkey 11/1/12.

The beer pours a nice auburn color and looks sort of like a darker spirit, since it has no carbonation or head whatsoever. The smell has a heavy syrupy sweet yet also vinegary note that somehow works and is appetizing. Almost seems like all the barrels are competing for dominance but it all evens itself out. Sour Cherry and oak certainly shine through in the nose and the taste as well. The taste adds in some earthy malts and some berries along with a honey like sweetness. It is tart on the palate but more like a tart fruit than a true sour yeast taste, certainly doesn't drink like a wild ale or Belgian lambic. A nice complex brew, but the feel is just good since it is a touch thinner than I would have liked.

Overall a great beer, a crazy mismash of flavors that a guy like me enjoyed.
