Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
'Fuggles' and 'Challenger' hops plus a blend of 4 local barley malts create an aromatic, robust, dark chocolate cream stout with a satisfying bittersweet aftertaste. Brewed with skill and patience in one of Britain's finest small breweries.

St. Peter's Brewery is located in a medieval hall in a remote and beautiful corner of Suffolk. There our beers begin their lives deep below the brewery with water drawn from a pure source - as it has been for over 700 years, essential for the full flavour and pure character of all St. Peter's beers.
Our beautiful flask-shaped oval bottle is a faithful copy of one produced c. 1770 for Thomas Gerrard of Gibbstown, just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. The original is now kept at St. Peters Hall and is a rare example of an oval Eighteenth Century beer bottle.

Decanted from a 16.9 oz (500 ml) bottle into a conical pint glass; production code 16251.
A: Pours a dark black color with a quarter inch tan-brown head rapidly dissolving to a rim and with a very small amount of soapy lacing.
S: Aromas of milk chocolate more than dark, cafe au last, vanilla and burnt toast.
T: Flavors pretty much follow the nose, although definitely also a raisin/fig note. More dark chocolate than milk and dark coffee predominate. There is a nice melange of roasted, sweet, and bitter elements. Strong bitterness notable early which lessens as it warms.
M: Medium bodied with light carbonation. Creamy and causes a nice tingling sensation on the palate.
O: A distinctive milk stout. The competing roasted and bitter elements make a nice counterpoise to this often overly sweet style.

Served in a munique glass, it pours black as night, with a two-finger head, frothy, creamy and light brown, with excellent retention. Nice lacing. After a while, the head settles as a thin layer of brown foam of a darker hue.

The bouquet is rich and assertive. Cacao nibs, milk chocolate, toasted malts, coffee, caramel, assertive vanilla.

Upfront, a nice amount of bitterness entering alongside coffee, roasted malts, and dark chocolate. Soon after the sweetness marks its presence in the form of vanilla, milk chocolate, sweet malts and caramel. It has a nice balance in the sense that once that the sweet notes appear, they don't overpower the palate since the bitter notes still linger in the background.
It has a long aftertaste, with a fresh sweetness, akin to vanilla and milk chocolate.
On the downside, it has a bit of a watery mouthfeel, not quite suitable for this style; but the mouthfeel is very smooth too.

A very good beer.

L: pours a pitch black color with a small top of white-brown head that disolves inn a rapid pace.

A: roasted malts, dark and milk chocolate, cofee, caramel, vanilla and burned sugar.

T&F: my imression of the flavours is that it has a good balance with the roasted, bitter and sweet notes. Strong chocolate and cofee flavour with roasted malts in the background at the begining, then i feel it gets more sweet with creamy notes. The finish is bitter, but still with the roasted flavours in the background, and is a good lenght inn the aftertaste.
Medium bodied with light carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.

O: This for sure was a beer for my preferance. A really enjoyable stout that I absolutelly would be trying again.

Beautiful bottle, autenthic English look and feel. Poured into my pitcher, small, yet lasting, almost creamy brownish head and coffee-cocoa smell, and a pitch black, creamy body. Not too strong taste, but everything in place; deliciously sweet malts, very slight bitterness, flavorful with caramel and chocolate. Mild carbonation, as it should be in a stout. Slides down extremely smoothly, especially considering it's 6.5%, and it leaves minimal aftertaste.
One of the best stouts I've ever had the pleasure of drinking! I'd drink it regularly - if it wasn't for the price.

This cream stout pours a pitch black color with a somewhat small frothy tan head. The scent is of dark chocolate, bready malts, and a bit of sugar. It’s a bit dessert like, reminiscent of a lower sugar cake, quite pleasant. The taste, however, isn’t as sweet as expected. This is a malt bomb stout with a real emphasis on roasted, bready malts and bitter dark chocolate with a more subtle coffee undertone. The finish is creamy although the bitterness detracts from the smoothness of the finish a bit. The body is as heavy as a stout should be, which is very much so. Overall it’s a very nice, classic stout on the robust end of the spectrum, especially for a cream stout, which is the way I like them. My only criticism is that the flavor lacks some complexity which keeps it from being an elite stout in my opinion.

Sneaky beer - I get almost no nose off of this, and it pours nearly flat, almost no head and minimal lace. The color's a dark pond with hidden warmth, I imagine this beer is clear if light could penetrate it. Once tasted, a consistent if mild carbonation throughout the beer, very reminiscent of a good cask-conditioned ale (poured a store bought pint); fairly dense body magnified by a quite malty, slightly hoppy sweetness. Definite dark chocolate that's not overbearing and mellows as the pint goes down.

Taste: SMOOTH, semi sweet, chocolate malts, milky, vanilla toffee. Same with the nose.
Mostly black in color, opaque, with tan head and some lace. Medium body. Yum. 34 IBUs

500 ml bottle into imperial pint glass, bottled on 11/2/2015. Pours crystal clear nearly opaque dark brown color with a small dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, vanilla, cream, light smoke/nuttiness, herbal, light pepper, slight dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity dark/roast/bready malt, lactose, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, vanilla, cream, light smoke/nuttiness, herbal, light pepper, slight dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/spicy hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, vanilla, cream, herbal, light smoke, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, lactose, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Light carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol for 6.5%. Overall this is an outstanding English style cream stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, lactose, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Spot on English malt complexity, with an awesome mouthfeel. A highly enjoyable offering.
