The legend returns! Beware the Goatman of White Rock Lake, a territorial terror who doesn't like anybody loitering in his neck of the woods. In honor of this hairy and horned hybrid, we present a dark and unique brew as bitter as his attitude.
Big and bold, this melding of a West Coast Black IPA and a German Schwarzbier has a sticky, dank bite, balanced by a smooth, roasted malt body. It's enough to curl your toes – or maybe your hooves.

I had this Dark Lager IPA (yes that sounds like an Oxymoron) or India Black Lager (better) from Lakewood Brewery, ABV 9.30%, IBU 82. Dark Lager India Pale Ale or India Black Lager are unusual yet fitting descriptions. It is a different kind of beer with an interesting flavor. I see that it is classified as a Euro Dark Lager here, I don't know if that is right or wrong, but maybe it is a new type?
Look: black with a light brown head
Aroma: sweet dark bread and piney hops
Taste: is dark malts, like a porter, and coffee, and piney hops like an IPA.
Feel: medium body, crisp, smooth

So first off, Baltic Porters are my jam. This is like one of those, but with the extra hops of an IPA. For what they were going for, this hits the target pretty well. Of the "Dark Lager IPA," the first thing that hits you is the "Dark." Nice and malty and balanced. Then the "IPA" with the bitter aftertaste, and the "lager" crispness a few moments later. Not sure why the world needs a "dark lager IPA," but this fits the bill.

A: 3.75 - Dark, oily black color with a small, very tan head.
S: 3.5 - Bit of a faint aroma, though pleasant, with maybe some black patent malt and a little spicy hoppiness.
T: 3.75 - Flavor is really geared toward the malt, for which there is plenty--think malt along a strong schwarz rather than stout, but plenty of dark malt flavor. Bitterness is high just to make up for the strength and amount of malt, bit it's by no means IPA level. In fact, I was hoping for a lot more hop flavor, but whatever there is, it's covered up by the malt.
M: 4.5 - Really good mouthfeel, for the strength. It's substantial, but not heavy at all, very smooth.
O: 3.75 - An experimental beer that doesn't really live up to the theme, but it's still drinkable.
