Style: Munich Dunkel Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is a dark amber lager made in the world famous brewing area around Bamberg, Germany. They are characterized by their smooth malty flavor. The Franconian version differs from the dark lagers of Bavaria by being slightly stronger and drier. Dunkels have a distinctive malty flavor that comes from a special brewing technique called decoction mashing. We are reviving the Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier from the Hümmer Brauerei in Breitengüßbach, the brewery whose brewhouse now resides in Denver, Colorado at Prost Brewing. (ABV 5.2% 25 IBU'S)

I haven't had too many Dunkel's, but this was one damn tasty beer.

Medium dark and malty. A ton of flavor packed into this beer.

A mild, bready sweetness on the tongue. Arguably my favorite beer made in Denver now.

Happily left Prost with a growler of Dunkel.

This is a very enjoyable dunkel. Very clean drinking with a pronounced sweetish maltiness. Big Bready flavor with lighter, more subtle notes of nuts, caramel, and raisins. Delicious. Big bready aroma...this is really impressive. First glass went down way too quick. I'll be buying this one again.

Fantastic drinkable Dunkel from the new Prost brewery in Denver. I was quite impressed with this one, and I was drinking from a new batch that was tapped just two days earlier. A nice hearty dark brown color with a creamy, long-lasting head. Nose was very bready with some soft roasty notes. More bready and roasty on the palate, with a delicious medly of malty flavors that were pleasing. I'm thinking dark bread, the ones with oat flakes on top. Good body and exceptionally drinkable. Very smooth across the palate and refreshing on a cold Fall evening in Denver. This one is top of my list for future Denver visits.

From 12 oz bottle into pint glass
Pours a thin beige head that disappears rapidly with no lacing. Color is dark amber with little to no streaming carbonation. Aroma of roasty malts and bread dough rising. Mouthfeel is light to medium and finish is somewhat damp. Flavors of char, dark toast, dark chocolate, some sort of ripe fruit and bittering hops. Very enjoyable.

Pours brown with a thin head that fades away after a few sips. Minimal lacing.

The smell is of medium-dark grain with nuts. Clean.

The taste is of medium-dark grain, some nuts with balancing bread and light noble hop touch in the semi-dry finish. Clean, crisp and very smooth.

An excellent example of a Franconian dunkel. Basic, a bit drier than the classic Bavarian style - very drinkable and enjoyable. They really nailed the style. I could drink this "all day long" and be very satisfied!
