500ml can, day 10 of the Costco Canada 2014 Beer Advent calendar.

This beer pours a clear, pale golden yellow colour, with a fistful of puffy, rocky, and broadly foamy bone-white head, which leaves an attractive band of tacky snow rime lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of crisp, crackery pale malt, lemon zest, gasohol, a touch of earthy yeast, and weedy, leafy, and grassy hops. The taste is bready, grainy cereal malts, somewhat stale apple, pear, and lemon fruit, scratchy yeast, an ethereal petrol essence, and more soft weedy, grassy, and leafy hops.

The carbonation is fairly active, in a tightly frothy manner, the body an adequate medium weight, and a bit too acerbic from hop and yeast (?) to be deemed all that smooth. It finishes off-dry, the gritty malt, lingering fruity notes, and grassy, leafy hops taking me home.

An enjoyable and engaging version of the style, if not exactly a world-beater, but I'm not in a picky mood right now. Tasty, well-rounded, and worthy of thoughts of multiple servings in some sort of dank, wood-tabled biergarten - do they do that sort of thing in Dortmund as well?

500mL can. Brew date: June 5, 2011; best by date Sept. 5, 2012. 5.3% ABV, 12.2 degrees Plato. Bought in Jusco spuermarket, Qingdao, China.

Appearance: Light gold color, very clear. About one finger of dense, off-white foam. Good head retention. Tiny bits of lacing distributed all around the glass.

Smell: Fresh cut grass, bread, slight citrus aroma.

Taste: Quite a nice hops bite, which builds for a few seconds before fading. Not much malt flavor.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied. Good level of carbonation, enough to tickle the palate. Long lingering fading bitterness in the aftertaste. Very dry finish.

Overall: Very refreshing, but the flavor is kind of a one-note. Not a complicated beer, but I will have it again.

Light yellow, golden color. 2 finger head that disappears in a couple of minutes. Lacing stays. Smells to me mostly like a typical, average lager- you can detect the hops. The main difference in smell was it was slight fruity- perhaps citrus. Thin to medium body. Good carbonation. Taste- it had a slight sweetness, slight grapefruit, and hops. Near end, bitterness of hops shows itself more, becomes strong, then fades to a slight bitter aftertaste. Quite refreshing. My first Dortmunder. Had the qualities of a Dortmunder: Clean, dry, very slight aromatic aroma.
