Really interesting take on a style that I generally don't like. This has the malt body of a red ale but very roasted and "stouty" if I can say that? It doesn't have the overly sweet, "god-I-hope-I-can-make-it-through-this-bottle taste. Very enjoyable and exceptional relative to the style. Damn good!

Poured into a Reuben's Brew pint glass. Pours a medium to dark red-orange amber with a fine half finger off-white head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt with some toast, light hints of orange citrus, overripe fruit. Flavor of surprisingly dry bready and toasted malt and a hint of char, light caramel and dry bread, lightly nutty. Finishes with long, lingering grassy hop bitterness with quite a bit of charred malt. Medium bodied with light creaminess. An interesting take on the red ale style, much drier and well toasted than usual, leaning towards a black ale hop and toasted malt profile. Not as much fruit as expected from the red ale style. Color is perfect. Rich, different and interesting. Surprising amount of flavor for a modest ABV ale. Unexpected but flavorful.

Draft at Reuben’s into a pint, review entered from notes. Deep reddish amber with a nice head. Deeply toasted and richly flavored, a particularly welcome trait in the often underwhelming red ale style. Toasted bread, dark red caramel sugars. An ample dose of citrus hops provides a moderate bitterness. Medium bodied and well carbonated. Finishing very nicely. Really appreciate the extra roast flavor here, making for one of the more enjoyable red ales I’ve come across.
