Very dark brown in the Crooked Line tulip with a dark beige head. Long legs in the glass and a tangy carbonation in the mouth. Just a whiff of cereal and charred malt.

Very darkly roasted barley with a distinct burnt taste. Dark caramel and a hint of bitter chocolate. Label claims 85 IBUs but it doesn't taste as hoppy as all that. Some of the near-acidic sensation of a big IPA, however. More sharp than most in the RIS style. The drinkability suffers from the relentless bitterness that develops after some sipping, along with the intense charred flavors. The sweetness of the malt is welcome with each new sip. This is a brew for those who like their Imperial Stouts more austere and bitter.

Served from a 22 oz bottle into a Founders Brewing snifter

A: Deep, dark hue. About an inch of dark brown head that lasted for several minutes.

S: Malt and chocolate.

T: Similar to the smell, but you can really taste the alcohol. A lot of RIS's hide the alcohol well, but not this one. After about 5 sips, I found myself kinda powering through it due to the deep alcohol content.

M: Good carbonation. Creamy, but still get that alcohol sense

O: 3.25 Wouldn't get again. There are way too many good RIS to get over this one.

22 ounce bottle poured into a snifter

A: Pours pitch black, mocha colored creamy head, head gone after a few minutes, small amount of carbonation, some lacing, very thick like motor oil, looks like a big beer.

A: Very impressed, roasted malts, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruits like figs, plums, dates, alcohol is well hidden for 12.2%, smells really good especially after two years.

T: Impressive, roasted malts, dark coffee, dark chocolate, figs, plums, dates, amazingly easy drinking especially for 12.2%, smooth, hit of moderate dark roasted coffee bitterness in the middle, finishes with more roasted notes.

M: Motor oil, smooth, creamy, amazingly easy on the palate, heavy bodied.

O: Very impressed, this has aged well, lots of flavor, easy drinking, alcohol is well hidden, definitely going to pick up another bottle, if you like big stouts this one is a must to try.

22oz bottle from j47paco (thanks man!). 2014 vintage. Served in a goblet.

The thick, dark liquid appears to have some chestnut highlights in the pour but rests in n the glass pitch black with a two finger cap of mocha head. The froth fades away completely l, leaving a couple tiny trails of lace where the head had previously rested but nothing else inthe way of retention.

Aromas of dark fruit, heavily roasted malts, a significant boozey note, burnt caramel and some brown sugar.

This is a bitter, roasty beast of an imperial stout. Tastes of anise, licorice, pure dark chocolate, fruit skins, burnt caramel, berry seeds, charred toast, subtle brown sugar and a healthy smack of alcohol.

Full, lush, creamy feel with soft carbonation. Roasty, dark fruit, burnt toast and a little cooling alcohol constitute the lingering, bittersweet finish.

Big Deluxe is a tasty base stout. I can see it having the full body and robust flavor profile that is necessary to stand up well to adjuncts and barrel treatments. Worth a try for fans of bitter, roasty stouts.
