Pietra (Amber)Pietra (Amber)
Notes: Pietra, the chestnut beer
Beer of the land and nature

PIETRA is a specialty beer, of low fermentation.

Using traditional methods it is brewed from selected malts and chestnut flour.

The chestnuts used come from the most beautiful and highest chestnut grove in Europe, located in the Castagniccia, at an altitude of over 1,000 meters.

Every autumn the fruit is hand-picked, transported down the hill on donkeys and sorted by hand. This guarantees flour of a very high quality, from a totally natural environment.

Highly fermentable, chestnut flour has an excellent impact on the quality of the head and gives beer its beautiful coloring. Mixed into the malt during the mashing process, the chestnut flour is a prime ingredient and not just a flavoring.

This recipe, unique in the world, gives PIETRA its conflicting taste accentuating a lingering subtle bitterness.

Powerful and delicate, robust and smooth, Pietra has a 6% alcohol content. It displays a beautiful amber color, an intense chestnut head, dense and creamy, making the pleasure of tasting it all the more enjoyable.

From a can, from shop in Paris.

Nice head level, deep reddish amber colour.

Contains chesnut flour, apparently.

Aroma is nice, sophisticated, different, yet still quite subtle and balanced.

Taste is also quite unique. Lots of different elements. Definitely can taste the chesnut, which works really well. Crisp initially, then the complex hoppy chesnuttiness slowly takes over.

I will give it a good score because it's unique and different. And very well balanced. And the different taste elements really give it identity. Personally I prefer stronger beers, though as a complex light and crisp offering, this is great.

Not quite amber, more like deep gold with slight haze.

Smell is very inviting in a biere de garde kind of way. A touch of farmhouse, a touch of smooth malt. Also slight greenish hops. Now I know this beer was brewed with chestnuts and you can certainly pick that up in the nose (not sure if I would get that blind.) Definitely a bready/nutty thing though. Overall a superb aroma.

Taste is very pleasant and balanced, although some astringency in the finish takes away from what I think otherwise is a very nice beer.

I thought this would be interesting, but I'm surprised at how good it is, especially the aroma. Also it's great that the chestnut shows through but blends with the other flavors well.

Also, this beer is obviously in the wrong category.

Not spectacular. We don't feel the taste of chesnut, or with a lot of imagination.
