On tap at Claremont Craft Ales in Claremont, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass the drink down. Smell is of malt, rye bread, chalk, and rubber tire aromas. Taste is much the same with spicy rye and burnt rubber flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty poor beer that has a distinct rubber tire aroma and flavor that is not pleasant whatsoever.

Dark brown in color with a khaki colored head. I get a bit of a body odor aroma up front followed by pine, grapefruit peel, rye, and molasses. There’s some roasted malt, a mild toffee sweetness, and a hint of coffee. The flavor is similar to the aroma, though lacking the body odor quality. Some pine bitterness, a moderate grapefruit, and roasted malt. A decent amount of rye, some sweet toffee, and a hint of molasses. Subtle chocolate and coffee flavors in the background as well.

Very dark color, very light aroma (expected more hops coming through). Malt dominates flavor while I'm longing for hops. Good body for style.

Good black dipa that was easy drinking with just enough hop note but without going over the top. Smooth mouthfeel and with low carb, could have had a bit more head and retention as it really was the only thing holding it back from being outstanding.

A looks like a porter--very black with a light tan head an almost no lacing 3.75
S hop and smoke--not much else. 3.5
T it has a lot of smoke and rye and malt on the front end--spicy with almost no sweetness. Hoppy in the backend. Nice evolution of flavor on the palate. 4.25
M pleasant--not too carbonated. 4
O a very solid black rye IPA--it does justice to the style 4

The beer is black with a thin head. It is so dark I cannot see carbonation. The smell is a strong pine hop scent with a slight smokey smell. I did not get much of a malt taste to begin with but rather the piney fresh hop flavor. The hop flavor faded quickly as a bread sweetness came in to balance it out. No real alcohol flavor. The flavor also had a slight hint of coffee. My lips could feel the carbonation of this soft beer and the flavor did not linger in the mouth.

Hard to find Black IPA's. Makes a good balance between the acidity of the malt and hops. Overall a bitter beer that you can really taste the dark malts.
