1 pint 9.36 fl oz. bottle, according to the label, with no apparent bottled on date present. My last beer from my recent trip to Iowa, bought this bottle from Benz Beverage Depot in Cedar Rapids. My first beer from this brewery, and my first encounter with what describes itself as a farmhouse oatmeal stout.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - After finally prying the cap off beneath the yellow wax seal, the beer pours a dark reddish cola brown colored body with about two fingers of fluffy bubbly beige head. Ruby highlights when held to the light.

S - Wow super funky upon the initial sniff. Brettanomyces galore. Some chocolate, wood, grainy malt, and cherry are discernible as the beer sits, but this is mostly a yeast bomb. Not really getting any coffee or oatmeal from the nose.

T - Wow, again. This is definitely not what I think of when I hear the words "breakfast stout", that's for sure, but this is quite a nice surprise. Very yeasty, bretty, and sour. Sour cherry is what I taste most of all. Perhaps just the faintest hint of coffee comes through for me, but not picking up on any oatmeal.

M - Feel is quick and clean, with some fruity stickiness, green apple skins, and a metallic aftertaste lingering on the palate.

Overall, I was nicely surprised, even if this wasn't exactly what I was expecting it to be. One might be inclined to think of Founders Breakfast Stout when hearing "breakfast stout", but this beer is a whole other beast. Definitely worth the try if you can get it, and I look forward to trying the other beers from CIB Brewery.

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Cloudy brown color with a fingers worth of tan head. Faint amount of lacing.

Smell- Yeast and fruit aromas with a tiny hint of coffee.

Taste- A tart, funk flavor with the tiniest hint of Dark roasted malt and coffee. This tastes almost nothing like a stout.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied and a little watery.

Overall- I don't consider a this a stout at all and CIB needs to quit calling it one. With that being said it is a decent enough beer if you approach it as a sour ale.
