after a vigorous hockey session, imperial ipa is not the beer i usually reach for, kokanee seems to be the popular choice in my locker room, and i generally get into it too, but when a dude on my team showed up with some of these last night, i couldnt resist. unfortunately, i dont think the beer was the freshest. the can date was lined up funny on the bottom and hard to read, but it looked to me like it was canned in june, not ideal. the beer does smell and taste slightly oxidized, but the hops are still bright in here, and it was enjoyable drink, even if not in its prime. very piney to me in nose and taste, maybe simcoe driven, and with very high bitterness still intact. there is some solid grain balance here, a touch of honey character to it, a light baked bready thing, but its not heavy at all and the residual sugar is low, its all just enough for this not to be too hoppy. some juniper and bitter orange peel notes in the flavor, floral honey on the swallow, and a wash back of green bitey bitterness, somewhat old school there, but a little more aromatic and flavorful on the hops than you find in the truly dated examples of the style. some alcohol character creeps in at the end, which makes it not an ideal post exercise refresher, but thats no surprise. its a well made beer, and i look forward to drinking it fresher next time. this is my first from these guys.

Heavy, thick, and sweet. That's the problem with this beer. First taste, I actually thought "yellow," like it taste yellow, whatever that taste is. It's sweet, too swet to me. Pair the sweetness with the heaviness of the mouth-feel and it's already on an uphill climb, starting in a defecit that it never makes up. The hops don't balance it out enough. Thankfully, they're not citrusy hops which, to me, is a huge plus. It's just not well done. Drinkable, but lacking. Needs improvement.

A pretty clear looking bright yellow bordering orange with a foamy white head. Decent retention and lacing. Smells like a classic; pine and grapefruit through and through. Taste follows with a bit of a chalky sweet-tarty finish. Good carbonation, excellent bitterness, and a pretty crisp feel despite what it's higher abv would elude belief. Overall, this is a pretty good in your face old school west coast style IPA. Cheers!

The appearance has a hazy golden orange somewhat brown body with a half finger’s worth of foamy head that concaves a bit into the body. The smell has a malty sweet yet light citrus trying to burst through. It stays a bit backward throughout the beer for the most part. The taste is mainly sweet with a stronger breadier note to the flavoring and more of a grapefruit/lemon-ness comes out as it warms. There is a strong grapefruit aftertaste with a quick citrus somewhat dry finish. On the palate, she sits about a medium on the body, comes across fairly sessionable. Carbonation seems to be good for the style and good for me. Overall, this is a good DIPA that I would have again, nothing to scream about, but definitely worth having again.

22oz bottle served in a large snifter. Given to me by @mr-jj. I don't see a date on it.

Pours clear golden with a small head. Very little carbonation. Smell is different. I can't place it. Smells really familiar.

Taste is similar to the smell. Very bitter. I find this unpleasant.

Mouthfeel is light and effervescent. Overall...I'm not going to drink this beer.

I've had this on many occasions but forgot to review. Having now at the Portland Winterhawks playoff game at the old Memorial Coliseum where micro brew stands are in abundance everywhere. This is a nice double IPA and a good flagship for Alameda who puts out great beers. Not too much bite or bitterness and goes down pretty smooth from the tap here in the arena. I could easily stock this in the fridge. Alcohol is well hidden. Taste a variety of hops, citrus and malt. Will definitey get again. Go Hawks!
