I really enjoyed myself at Alameda. I went to three brewpubs with a couple of friends and this place really welcomed us in.

I found the location to be not easy to find coming from out the area, but once we entered we got settled and were forgetting that quickly. The rugged cinderblock and burlap intererior had a certain charm. There were booths with honey colored wood that had black and white pics of hop fields. The booths were also backlit with sunny yellow lighting that added to the ambience.

We were greeted quickly and the drink order was taken within minutes. There were organic and nitro tap options as well as seasonals adding to the overall selection score. I enjoyed the fact I had a choice that made me think about my next brew. The quality was very good - food was brought to us fresh and hot. I had the lemon pepper chicken fingers which really hit the spot.

I found the value to be reasonable with good portions and the merchandise available wasn't overpriced either. This was a very good choice. I would recommend Alameda to anyone checking out Portland for the first time.

Well...this WAS going to simply be a review of Alameda's Yellow Wolf IIPA. But that isn't happening.

As part of Oregon Craft Beer Month, one event advertised in this week's Portland Mercury was a $5 growler fill today only at the Alameda taproom on Freemont. That was it..one line, no exclusions, restrictions or fine print. And the Alameda website made no mention of anything at all (but it doesn't look like anyone updates that site much at all....).

Sweet deal! For a visitor to PDX like me, a timely chance to get a bigger sample of an obviously fresh brew.

Well, after arriving there earlier today, I was quite surprised to find that -- despite the advertisement --- growlers cost $6. Also, despite being the flagship beer of the brewery, Yellow Wolf DIPA was NOT included as one of the beers eligible for the promo. This addendum info was all on a card posted at the bar....not a terribly convenient place to find out such information, after bicycling 25 minutes to get there.

The barman, who appeared to have full authority and responsibility for such decisions was cordial enough, but insincere apologies don't really fix anything.

So. Rather than buy a beer I didn't want, and for more money than I was told it would cost, and being totally PO'd, I left.
Hardly what I have come to expect from a Portland biz. Or any craft brewery. Or a promotional event.
And certainly not how I wanted to spend part of a precious vacation Saturday.
So thanks.

PS -- This website now reminds me: "You have had 0 beers from this brewery".
Yeah, I get that.

I really enjoyed my visit here. Great food, excellent house-made beers on tap, TVs, has pretty much everything you want. If I get back to Portland I'm really going to make an effort to get back here.

Very good beer selection and beers were very tasty. Very warehouse-like inside but that doesn't matter if the beer's good! Server was knowledgeable which always helps for first timers. IPA's and stouts were the dominant styles and very well crafted. Of all the options in the area, definetely worth a visit for travelers or locals.

I stopped in here on an quiet afternoon. The ball game was on and a few people were in there... the place had a good local vibe to it. I liked the service and the beers were pretty solid, but I really liked their Black IPA especially... I had to buy one on the way out. I did not try their food as I was trying to do the Portland food cart thing at the time. They had good selection, and one beer that was very unique that had a spice in it... I can't recall if it was garlic or something like it. I appreciate any effort like that even if I'm not crazy about the beer. If I ever get in the area again, I would be more than happy to stop here again.

I went to Alameda twice in a four day period. First time was after I dropped my girlfriend off at PDX, and the second time was when I picked her up from PDX. She was looking for a place to eat, and since I was just there, I figured she would want to check it out as well.

It's right outside a neighborhood, and is easily missed if you don't see the sign out front. When I first walked in, I got a face full of hop aroma. The brew tanks are right near the entrance, so it's hard to miss that smell. I went the first time around 11:15 AM right after they opened. There was only one other couple there, so I was lucky enough to get my beer quick (Siberian Imperial Stout - Seasonal) and my food came rather quick as well (Reuben). Second time I was there, I had some really nasty nachos from their happy hour menu. The Humus plate my GF had was pretty good however.

There are a couple of TV's showing nothing but ESPN, and there is a bathroom with one toilet, and the door doesn't lock. So be careful not to walk in on anyone while they are on the toilet.

Visited 8.12.2010.

Located in PDX Fremont District, close to Beaumont Market, Alameda operates on a relatively small 5-barrel system with plans to expand in the near future. All their house brews are of high quality with their award winning Stout their signature brew. However, the addition of several pub-only offerings (including a tasty CDA) and their latest addition to their bottled products, Yellow Wolf DIPA, only increase the allure of the brewery. While I didn't have any food, they have a significant menu with generous portions from what I saw on my visit. The help, including both the barstaff and the brewers, was friendly and willing to help. While I don't hang out in this part of town too often, I will be sure to stop by to check on their pub-only offerings in the future. A worthwhile stop after filling your cooler at Beaumont Market.
