Rushing Duck Brewing Company
New York, United States

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Dutch for "The Living Dead." The beer starts with a rich chocolatey base and the addition of the Belgian Trappist yeast and 7 lbs of cherries per barrel gives De Levende Doden a complex fruitiness. The beer comes in at 8.3% ABV and is perfect for a cool, blustery fall night.

On tap at the Birdsall House in Peekskill, NY

Arrived very dark brown, with a minor mocha head, that left some strands and bits of lacing

Malty nose with a chocolate back note.

More chocolate on the palate, more dark, smooth malt notes and some smoke as it warms. I'm also getting a nice Belgian yeasty character, adding to complexity. A hint of hops in the finish of this pleasant Belgian dark creation. Nicely crafted.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving only a small collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of Belgian yeast are present in the nose along with some hints of dark chocolate, the latter of which becomes a little stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of Belgian yeast along with notes of dark chocolate and black cherries. As the beer warms in temperature, the chocolate flavors become stronger and the cherry flavors weaken to some degree.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting Belgian Strong Dark Ale that really changes as the beer warms up. I liked it better when it was colder and I got more of the cherry aromas and flavors.

Look: Trying this in a VERY dimly lit bar, so it seems pitch black...but holding a candle to it shows it a deep brown. Very short lived head, but mine shows more lace than previous reviewers.

Smell: Coffee, Cherries, a little herbal...thyme, oregano....Not so sweet or thick as to reference raisins or plums. No cloying sweetness.

Taste: Easy drinking. Taste true to the nose with coffee, sour cherry, yeast is less belgian strong than dry english. No banana, no clove, still getting some oregano...hmm. I like it very much actually, but I don't know if it matches the style entirely.

Feel: Thicker than expected mouth feel. Lingers on the tongue and leaves a dry, pleasant after taste.

Overall: Tasted this along side an Ommegang Abbey. It compares VERY favorably. Holds up longer after the pour and very pleasant to sit and enjoy w/or wo/food. Nice. Doubt I'll see this much at home, but a pleasure to taste even once.

A: Dark acorn brown with mahogany and dark cherry highlights. Light tan, finger and a half head. No lacing.

S: Like a very good coffeehouse. cocoa nibs, sour cherries and plum. Rather basic, but pleasing.

M: Has a fdecent sour astringency to start. Medium body and low carbonation. Pretty easy to go down considering ABV and flavor. Kinda dry in the overall sensation.

T: Roasted cocoa, cherries. Some herbal hopping and tangy plum skin keeps any sweet caramel maltiness in check. Some sweet smokiness as well. I'd liken this to Cherry Garcia, but w/o all the added sugar, and lacking in the cream. Really just a wonderful balance, simple, but good , quality flavors.
