Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Baby is our Nice Weather-Backyard Drinking-Style IPA. It has the hoppy flavor and aroma of a Double IPA, but at 4.4% abv. it’s manageable to have a few without falling over! Baby Elephant is brewed with pale malt, wheat, and oats to give it enough body, but no cloying sweetness. It’s alsohopped with Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, and Summit hops, which give Baby Elephant its signature juicy, citrus west-coast hop profile.

Had a pint of this at the Bier Abbey. No one knew if it was a small beer made from the second runnings of War Elephant, or if it was an IPA that simply used the same hop pallet as War Elephant. To me, it tasted like a small beer, but I got no proof of that.

Good pour--hazy orange, nice head. Smells strongly of yeast and amarillo.

Tastes like small beer syndrome. Big hop burst up front with huge nodes of pine and citrus, but then the flavor drops off considerably near the middle. It's never bad, and it's never quite weak, but the drop off is a little disappointing.

Still, a good example of a small beer.

L: A light golden yellow. Some bubbles and about a finger of white head. Some lacing.

S: A nice citrus mix. Some mango and orange. A little pine.

T: The taste follows the smell. A nice light citrus kick with a little piny-ness .

F: Light bodied with some carbonation.

Overall this is one of my favorite session ipas. Went down easy and had a lot of taste. I look forward to having it again.

Very pale for an IPA. A light gold with a nice white head and a touch of lace. Smell is earthy with a touch of citrus. Nice malt undercurrent that brings olfactory memories of full fleged IPAs. Taste is big with earthy hops and light pine and faint citrus. They really got the order right for the abv. Malt sweetness has just enough body to balance the considerable hoppines. Nice grains and and light sweetness. Finish is quite dry and clean with a sharp bit hop oil lingering. Feel is crisp and quenching with a light but substantial body. A perfect thirst quenching session beer. Maybe the best low abv IPA I've had.

On tap at the Lionheart in Albany, NY.

Pours a light golden yellow, with a half inch fizzy head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells grassy, with some grapefruit, and pine.

As with most session IPas, not a whole lot of malt flavor here. This one feels slightly watery- hop water, basically. Some light pine, a bit of grapefruit, and a light grassy flavor. Just honestly a little bit boring.

This one is obviously light bodied, with a medium amount of carbonation, and a crisp, but watery mouthfeel.

I'm sure War Elephant is great, haven't tried it yet, but this one is disappointing. Pass.
