Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Beanhead takes the base beer of a robust porter and pairs is with a fantastic coffee flavor that comes from a Guatemalan bean roasted by Java Love Coffee Roasting Co. in Kauneonga Lake, NY. Beanhead is completely black in color with an impressive tan head. It has a taste of intense coffee with overtones of bittersweet cocoa and caramel malt balanced with a slight earthy bitterness. While it may look filling, Beanhead is actually medium bodied and lacks the cloying sweetness that makes so many other stouts and porters seem so “heavy.”

I had this on draught at the brewery. Pint pour in a tulip glass. It pours a dark brown with cola hues, and a foamy, ecru-colored head and lacing. It smells of roasted malt, coffee, and a slight smokiness. It has a nice coffee taste, not as burnt as many porters, with a hint of chocolate. It also has a bit of smoke. It is fairly light in body with moderate carbonation. It's really easy to drink with a manageable ABV of 5.7% Overall, it is a well-made coffee porter. It's not at the level of Victory at Sea but still very good.

This beer smells fantastic when cracking the can. The coffee aroma is intense and taste is sweet and smooth. Just had Beezlebub before and this beer wins the head to head.

Poured from a growler

Pours deep brown with a light tan head. Slight coffee smell. Taste is toasty malts with some coffee. It is not a thick porter but I don't find it thin like some have commented.
Overall this is an enjoyable drinkable Coffee Porter. Another great job by Rushing Duck.

A fresh growler sent to me in the latest New Beer Sunday BIF by Poobah cavedave. I cracked the seal and poured this in my 13oz. stout/porter glass.

Look- Pours a thin medium cola brown color leaving a finger of tan foam that settles to a thin ring.

Smell- Dark roast coffee with a hint of smoke.

Taste- Rich dark roast coffee with some smokiness in the finish. A bit of bitter dark chocolate comes out as well.

Feel- On the thin side but well carbonated. A hint of bitterness is there too.

Overall- A pretty tasty coffee forward beer, but it falls short in overall complexity. A little thinner and more pale than a top porter like Eddie Fitz. The coffee flavor is there, but not much else to elevate it to the next level. Perhaps I've had way too many stellar coffee stouts that have jaded my palate? That aside, it's a good enough beer to get your coffee fix.

Didn't like this more because of the nitro, on nitro at Barcade Brooklyn. Creamy, some roast aroma, but not so complex. Tasted more like coffee grounds.
