Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Beanhead takes the base beer of a robust porter and pairs is with a fantastic coffee flavor that comes from a Guatemalan bean roasted by Java Love Coffee Roasting Co. in Kauneonga Lake, NY. Beanhead is completely black in color with an impressive tan head. It has a taste of intense coffee with overtones of bittersweet cocoa and caramel malt balanced with a slight earthy bitterness. While it may look filling, Beanhead is actually medium bodied and lacks the cloying sweetness that makes so many other stouts and porters seem so “heavy.”

Didn't like this more because of the nitro, on nitro at Barcade Brooklyn. Creamy, some roast aroma, but not so complex. Tasted more like coffee grounds.

A: The beer is very close to being jet black in color; when held up to a bright light only traces of dark brown are visible near the corners of the glass. It poured with a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of coffee beans are present in the nose. The smell becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste is dominated by flavors of coffee beans—more like the cold brewed variety that doesn't have much of the acidity or bitterness. Faint hints of sweetness and underlying malts are also perceptible.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: If you are a coffee lover, you'll probably find this porter to be very enjoyable as it is all about the java. I found it to be a lot more drinkable compared to other beers in the style.

From 09/26/14 notes. On tap at Gingerman in NYC.

Pours a deep dark brown color with one inch of medium tan head and low carbonation evident. Cream, vanilla, light milk choclate, light coffee, roasted malts, and some chalk. Light body and low carbonation. Little too watery for the mouthfeel to be great.

Overall I liked this one. I wish the mouthfeel was a little bit thicker, and there was a little more coffee to it, but it was very nice none the less. Worth checking out.

Growler from Yorktown, Bev, Yorktown, NY

New local brewery from just cross the river, time for a tasting room visit.

Pours near black, nice and lasting darker tan head. Goes to a tiny bubble fil and leave hig fine lacing.

Dark grains and ample coffee on the nostrils

Roasty and heavy on the coffee on the palate, this is a robust and dare I say stout take on the style. Long dry finish with some smoke, more dark grains and again coffee. Carbonation on point. Nicely crafted and well worth a try.

Worth giving this one a try if distribution reaches your neck of the woods

Served via nitro tap at the Madison Pour House in Albany, NY.

Pours a shiny dark black. 1 inch head, with not much visible carbonation.

Smells like roasted malts with a small, almost negligible whiff of coffee.

The nitro has smoothed this one out to the point where it tastes like creamy water. Barely any discernible coffee flavor here, just a mess of roasty, creamy water. Not recommended.

Typical nitro mouthfeel. The body is way too thin.

Would really like to try this off of a standard tap as I think it would be tastier.

Had this on regular tap at Rushing Duck Brewing Company in Chester, NY, and it was way better than that nitro abomination. Roasty, great coffee flavor, creamy and full body despite the lower ABV. A really great sessionable coffee porter. Adjusting the score accordingly here.

Interesting peanut butter flavor, but the coffee aroma smells like overcooked pot coffee. It comes off too acidic, even though the malts are lovely and smooth.
