BEER INFO

New York, United States | website

Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Meaning “Father Winter” in Russian, Ded Moroz, is pitch black in color. It is an imposing beer that is best enjoyed by slow sipping to fully soak up this beer’s complexity. It has a very deep flavor profile of dark chocolate, coffee, graham cracker, overripe fruit, amongst others. To add to its complexity, it is generously hopped with a large portion of imported Brittish hops to balance the sweetness and keep it true to style. Ded Moroz is a decadent treat perfect for the cold winter months!

A: Poured from the 750 ml bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body appears relatively thick and black, though with some mahogany hues on the pour. In the glass it's black with an oddly-thin-bubbled film of a head on top. First thought was, "maybe I should've poured this more aggressively."

S: Malt, molasses and dark fruits. Hint of dark chocolate. Decent Imperial/Double Stout nose.

T: First impression: now I know why there was no head - because there is basically no carbonation whatsoever, so nothing to rise up and create such a head. . . .

Anyway, as for flavors: sweet stuff is there - modest chocolate malt, molasses and a generic fruitiness. Finishes with a modest tannic bitterness and a dark chocolate-type bitterness. Heat from the 11.2% ABV is noted, though mainly as lingering heat in the aftertaste and warmth in the belly rather than as a "hot" sensation during the sip.

M: Heavy in heft, slick in feel due to a complete lack of carbonation.

O: OK, so I've reviewed over 1100 beers - full reviews - here on BA, and in my 8 years of reviews, I don't think I've ever reviewed a beer that was so bereft of carbonation. It's unfortunate, because I think this beer has potential with the flavor profile; some active carbonation would wake up the palate and improve the experience.

On tap at One Mile House in NYC.

Served in a wine flute/tulip glass.

Dark as hell in the bar but the beer is darker. Reminds me of a DMX album title.

I'll offer now that I just threw back two Macallan 12s in a club spinning hip-hop and reggae and then ate a special bit of brownie.

Having said that, very fruity aroma on this. Plum, fig, cherry and raisin. Sweet notes remind me of grape juice. Again. Very fruity.

My friend told me he didn't like me calling his beers fruity. But it is what it is. This beer tastes sweet dark fruit fruity. Almost like a juice box in your lunch box. Eventually carries to caramel and grape sucker and a roasted malt and floral yeast finish. 4

No complaints with how this drinks. Rich and sticky and full. Hints at some tartness or vinous notes but then goes creamier and lets some smoke in. 4.25

Excellent. Not sure what is so magical about this beer but it has really reminded me how overwhelming and ridiculous the NYC beer scene is. Hopslam and Lunch were available and I chose this beer from upstate. And I wasn't disappointed in the least.

Bottle purchased at Oliver's Beverage in Albany, NY. I'm not sure of the exact vintage of this, but I think it's about 2 years old.

Pours a very dark black, with not much head or lacing.

Smells like vanilla, dark fruits, a bit of chocolate, with some slight leafy hops.

At about 2-ish years old, this seems to have lost any sens of roastiness, replaced by almost vinous wine flavor, lots of dark fruits, chocolate, etc. There is no alcohol presence whatsoever, which is nice.

This is fairly light bodied for the ABV, which might have to do with the age. It has a creamy and slightly oily mouthfeel, along with a very low level of carbonation.

This is pretty good, but it seems like it shouldn't be aged all that long.

2013 vintage. Absolutely delicious. Well worth putting this away for a few years.
