Meaning “Father Winter” in Russian, Ded Moroz, is pitch black in color. It is an imposing beer that is best enjoyed by slow sipping to fully soak up this beer’s complexity. It has a very deep flavor profile of dark chocolate, coffee, graham cracker, overripe fruit, amongst others. To add to its complexity, it is generously hopped with a large portion of imported Brittish hops to balance the sweetness and keep it true to style. Ded Moroz is a decadent treat perfect for the cold winter months!

Poured stout black and the light brown head struggled to get coverage over the top of the beer, but it was 3 years old.
The aroma is lost to me at this point. Stupid Covid.
The taste was almost everything promised above in the description but the hops, those were beaten into submission and hidden.
The feel was just viscous enough to encourage sipping, and tongue coating flavors.
Really enjoyed this!

Very solid RIS.

Great color, decent head. A bit of nose, and easy drinking. A lot of good subtle flavors, with well hidden ABV.

Worth having.

Winter 2016-2016 bottling. Decent, more like a barleywine.

Good head production and retention. Head is dark tan, leaning toward a darker brown; body is inky black.

Huge, imposing, slightly oxidized nose, full of incredibly rich RIS tones: molasses, espresso bean, char, red grapes, banana, brown sugar, toffee, caramel, chocolate, toast, prune, raisin, licorice ... it goes on and on. Smells every bit the big beer it is. If Old Rasputin set the template for an American-style RIS, this seems to be following that pattern - but bigger, and perhaps a touch smoother (this bottle has a year of age, which likely helps).

Smoother on the palate than expected. Huge, thick, and rich, but with very little harshness. The high ABV shows, but not painfully; the English hops add plenty of bitterness, but just restrained enough; and the massive malt base is thick, chewy, and only slightly sweet. Chocolate, espresso, molasses, brown sugar, raisin, toast.

Noticeable back-end heat.

Pour is obsidian black with a dense tan head. The nose has dark chocolate, stone fruit, and booze - lotsa booze, actually, which is surprising in a non-BA beer.

The dark chocolate leads on the taste, and the stone fruit and booze are definitely accounted for, but the British hops mix well on the taste. If this had a little more heft on the mouthfeel, it would be world-class, IMHO. It’s still a pleasure to drink on a chilly January night in Northern Indiana.

Got in a BIF from MacMalt. 500 ml bottle into snifter, Winter 2017-2018 release. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, molasses, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, and date; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Increasing booze intensity as it warms, a bit overwhelming. Nice aromas with good complexity and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, molasses, toffee, nuttiness, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, leather, tobacco, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roast/char bitterness and spicy alcohol on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, molasses, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark bread, licorice, dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy flavors; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying/acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from hop/roast bitterness and spicy alcohol. Light carbonation and full body; with a very creamy/silky/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Light-moderate increasing warmth of 11.2%, with a bit of booze after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Russian imperial stout. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy flavors; pretty smooth to sip on slowly for the big ABV. I liked it more as I moved through the glass. Not nearly as bitter as I expected for the style; but it has a very wide array of complexity from malts and English yeast. A very enjoyable offering, but could definitely use a couple years of age. Quite hot on the fusels.

25oz bottle. Winter release 2017-2018. Pours a pitch black color with over an inch of medium brown head. Good amount of lacing. The aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, earth, cinnamon and dark cherries. The taste is dark chocolate, black coffee, earth, cinnamon, leather, roasted malts and dark fruits. Dark cherries, roasted malts and coffee at the end. Not nearly as boozey as I expected from a beer with an ABV over 11%. Medium to heavy body. Worth seeking out.

Dark black beer with a brown head. Smells like black licorice, dark chocolate coffee and some alcohol. Tastes amazing with licorice, dark chocolate, with a finishing taste of roasted malt and coffee.

Winter 2016-2017 Release. Poured from bomber into stout glass. It pours a walnut brown color with hues of dark cola, and an enormous, fluffy beige heard and lacing that lasted throughout the pour. It smells of dark roasted malt, rather smoky, with dark fruit and nuts. The smell isn't as bold as I'd hoped. It has a nice, rich taste of burnt coffee, cherry, raisin, baker's chocolate, and a hint of vanilla, and it finishes with some smoky bitterness. The smell improves as the glass warms and I'm glad I'm drinking this from the bottle and not on draught. It is medium-bodied, not chewy or oily, lightly carbonated, and the 11.2% ABV packs a whallop. Overall, it is a really good RIS from a terrific brewer. It's not at the level of Parabola, Ten Fidy or Expedition but it's an excellent showing and I would gladly drink it any time. I wish I had bought more.
