Notes: Dog’s Bollocks is an English Style Ale, not unlike a classic Barleywine. To make this beer even more complex and flavorful, 25% of the beer has been aged in oak barrels that were originally used to age Bourbon. The base beer is rich and malty. It has a distinct caramel and biscuity flavors, and is balanced nicely with a nice dose of English hops. From there the barrel aging process helps smooth the beer out by adding vanilla, spice, oak, and bourbon notes to the beer. This beer is the “Dog’s Bollocks.”

Appearance: Pours a tawny brown color with ruby highlights; the ecru head fluffs over the liquid, leaving spotty lacing

Smell: Interesting aromatic blend of caramel, oak, bourbon, Rykola herbs and dark fruit

Taste: Caramel dominant, with the herbal Rykola and Bourbon tones arriving early; oaky, with dried dark fruit, through the middle; some earthy bitterness builds, after the swallow; though that just keeps the sweetness in check

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation; some warmth in the gullet

Overall: Not your typical English Barleywine and more like a Strong Ale, truth be told; quite nice

Thanks, yankeepride, for the opportunity

These ducks run with the big dogs as they introduces their second rendition of Dog's Bollocks. Its tread on the original barleywine style provides succulent and flavors with the strength to rival that of wine.

Deep amber and tawny brown, the beer's malt-forward demeanor is obvious to the eye. Looking like brandy or sherry, its distinctive cap of froth is rich with sweet toffee, cashew, buttery caramel and dried fruit. Laced with the boozy sweetness of bourbon and wood, the taste greets the tongue in the same fashion of well-aged tawny port.

As its decadence seep deeper and deeper into the tastebuds, its rich toffee, rum cake, butterscotch and molasses flavors become obviously dessert-like. Weave in the dried fruit character from cherry, apple, fig and date, and memories of fresh baked fruitcake come about. While the subtle roundness from woodsy hops arise, they tease the palate with notions of bitter maple.

With the creamy sweetness of malt easing up a bit and its alcohol balance growing, the barleywine finishes just off of cloying and with the spicy prickle of bourbon along with light coconut, caramel and wood spice.

On tap @ Decicco's Brewster

Pours a nice amber color with a hint of off white head.

Smell is sweet with notes of bourbon and hints of vanilla.

Taste matches the nose almost perfectly. The bourbon is more pronounced in the taste.

The mothfeel is very nice as well. A nice full bodied barleywine.

Overall, this is another great beer from Rushing Duck. I have to go get more before it is all gone.

Dog's Bollocks "Batch 0" released in 32oz medicine bottle style growlers at the brewery last weekend. This is a partial bourbon barrel aged (6 months) barleywine from Rushing Duck.

Appearance: Pours a fairly clear mahogany with red tinged folds and a 1 finger off white crown that shows moderate retention and lace Not surprising since this beer is in the double digits abv wise I believe.

Smell: Waves of sweet bourbon, a hint of plum / fruity english yeast esters, a present yet controlled alcohol presence, moderate roast, a dash of charred barrel, and a grainy note.

Taste: Same as the nose and fairly well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Thick side of medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: A well balanced and extremely drinkable BA Barleywine.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber. Big khaki head. Lasts with wisps for a while.

Smell - Smells like peanuts. Peanut butter. Caramel. I don't get any of that bourbon barrel.

Taste - And it kinda tastes like peanuts. Nutty malts. A hint of oak. Caramel. The finish is a little astringent. Some apple fruitiness, too.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Well carbonated.

Overall - Middle of the road. I have no complaints, but I also can't say too much about it is great.

Pours a beautiful brown, clear and thick looking, nice finger of tan foam atop that leaves some lasting lace as it retreats.

Tart yeast, vanilla, bourbon, caramel, some sharp but very light hops in there too, all in a medium strength aroma that is enticing.

Wow all the flavors of the bouquet, but the hops at the end of the sip leave a nice herbal drying. It is sweet, but it is a balanced sweet that doesn't overpower nor cloy, and the bourbon goodness is forward but really tasty. Clean and very delicious.

Lighter in the mouth than many, but it is an advantage for this big beer. Low carb., really nice finish, clean linger on palate.

What a great beer, can't wait for them to do this again. I think I saw 5 barrels of it ageing on a pallet in back.
