Rushing Duck Brewing Company
New York, United States

Style: British Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Dog’s Bollocks is an English Style Ale, not unlike a classic Barleywine. To make this beer even more complex and flavorful, 25% of the beer has been aged in oak barrels that were originally used to age Bourbon. The base beer is rich and malty. It has a distinct caramel and biscuity flavors, and is balanced nicely with a nice dose of English hops. From there the barrel aging process helps smooth the beer out by adding vanilla, spice, oak, and bourbon notes to the beer. This beer is the “Dog’s Bollocks.”

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber. Big khaki head. Lasts with wisps for a while.

Smell - Smells like peanuts. Peanut butter. Caramel. I don't get any of that bourbon barrel.

Taste - And it kinda tastes like peanuts. Nutty malts. A hint of oak. Caramel. The finish is a little astringent. Some apple fruitiness, too.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Well carbonated.

Overall - Middle of the road. I have no complaints, but I also can't say too much about it is great.

This strikes you , right off the bat, as an excellent example of an English Barleywine. The nose is filled with tell tale maple, molasses, toffee, caramel, butterscotch and dark fruit aromas.

The flavor is sweet with sugary candy taste like Wurthers Original toffee, Bit O`Honey and butterscotch. There's a layer of brown sugar and honey with a base of malt. As I said before, excellent barleywine.

Poured from 750ml bottle into a sixpoint tulip glass. Not sure of the vintage but at least a year old.

Looks is a hazy dark amber with a thing quarter inch head.

Aroma is dry fruity malt with a hint of vanilla from the oak.

Taste is dry and fruity which gives into an extremely dry oaky finish.

Delicious winter sipper.

Bottle shared by myself today at the Plan Bee Savage release.

Pours a slightly opaque reddish-brown, with a small head, and not much lacing.

Smells like caramel, toffee, vanilla, some slight chocolate, and a hint of bourbon.

This seems to a blended barrel-aged barleywine, with a small portion of it barrel-aged. I wish the barrel character was slightly more out in the front. There's a bit of bourbon, with light sweetness, some oak, vanilla, caramel, and toffee. There's no alcohol burn at all, it's really smooth and rounded-out.

This is a medium bodied, slightly thinner than I would've liked, but substantial enough. It's got a slightly syrupy mouthfeel, with a low level of carbonation.

This is a really nice barleywine. I'd like to see a 100% barrel-aged version though, that would be interesting.

750mL bottle poured into a tulip. A: Dark amber and slightly cloudy, with nice lacing. N: Strong nutty malts, with a peanut aroma. T: The peanuts really come through, mild spices, and accompanied by some sweetness. P: Mouthful is smooth with some carbonation. O: Rushing Duck has made a very enjoyable English style ale. This is not a beer you should chug, but sip and savor, all the flavors this beer has to offer.

Excellent brew from an excellent brewery. I'm a regular visitor at Rushing Duck, and I have never tasted a beer I didn't like, but this one is the best.

Dog's Bollocks pours a deep cloudy mohogany color with hints of amber and with a small head and low retention and low of lacing. Smells of mostly of bourbon, and dark cherry. Also some vanilla, earth, maple syrup, and oak.

Taste starts with oak and light vanilla, then bourbon, then crisp herbal hops, earthiness, and dark cherry/sweet/fruity. Nice crisp dry finish, can definitely feel the alcohol in the taste more than the aroma. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy with below average carbonation and a bit of slickness.
