Vintage 2011: What you have here is quite rare and special. We take 1-year old Imperial Stout, age it in Cognac Barrels for 6 months, then carefully blend it at a very rich ratio of 1:2 with this year’s Imperial Stout. Rich powerful vanilla and sweet grape notes come through in waves, complimented by subtle cognac esters and supported by the big roasty malt backbone of the base stout. This beer can be enjoyed now or cellared for many years to come.

from notes.

Black body, foamy, creamy tan head.

Big oaky cognac notes, chocolate and dark fruit blends into light coffee/roast notes.

Viscous, silky, full body, low prickly carbonation.

Very smooth, well blended flavors. ABV is very well hidden. A really enjoyable barrel-aged stout.

On tap at E9 the other night.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is attractive, and showcases plenty of brandy/cognac, along with licorice, dark chocolate and vanilla. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, and while this beer is undeniably tasting, I thought the mouthfeel was a bit thin (a surprise in an 11% abv. beer). Also, maybe the beer was served to cold, but on this night, the cognac just didn't seem to blend in all that well with the underlyling RIS. Previous times I've tried this beer (at the PIB event last year for example) I thought it much more impressive (on those occasions it wasn't served as cold). Alcohol is well integrtated into the flavor profile, and the finish is long, with some noticeable brandy and licorice at the end.

A nice beer, no doubt, but at $9 for 10 ounce pour, I'm not sure I need to revisit this any time soon.
