Moderately hazy amber, with slight reddishness. Creamy light tan head that leaves a 1/4" ring and 1/2" of spotty lacing.

Smell is moderately sweet caramel, toffee, and a slight wet decayed wood aroma.

Taste leads with caramel that isn't as sweet as the aroma, following with some (moist) dried fruit - prune, fig, raisin, cherry . There is a slight vaguely spicy flavor [coriander+allspice+clove] as would be found in some Belgian saisons, but in the background, and much less pronounced, plus slight wood/smoke, and light, pleasant bitterness that nicely balances the sweet malt.

Feel is light side of medium, with a similar level of very fine carbonation that builds towards finish, and produces a slight drying effect.

Overall, I quite enjoyed it, and would recommend giving it a try. I tend to prefer Scotch ales that have more apparent smoke/peat, and where the individual flavor elements are less melded, & stand out more -this is more homogeneous- but I like this expression too.

Crowler from the Genesee Brew House.

This one pours a somewhat light brown color, with a small foamy head, and not much lacing.

This smells strangely boozy for the lower (7.5%) ABV, with a big fruitiness, toffee, and some licorice.

I usually love Genesee Brew House beers, but this didn't quite work as well for me. It's boozy and a bit thin. The flavor is mainly fruity maltiness.

This is medium bodied, but a touch thinner than I'd want it to be, with a decent level of drinkability.

This isn't one of Genny's best beers. It's still worth a try.

Too boozy, strong taste of hop, lacking the strong malt sweetness and the faint roastiness. Doesn't really taste like a scotch ale as all. Good looking though.

Rich amber to dark color. Strong "hoppy" aroma but not unpleasant. Strong rich flavor that had a slight peppery aftertaste. Overall, a rich flavorful experience that compares to the more expensive scotch ales.

The looks is opaque dark brown with some reddish tones. The head is creamy tan, short retention, with a ring remaining to lave some spotty lacing.

Smells of pumpernickel bread, molasses, licorice, star anise, clove, plum, raisin, and sour cherry.

Tastes follows the nose. Pumpernickel bread, molasses, and licorice upfront. Big, sweet, and malty. The mid-palate offers some clove and star anise spice. There is just a touch of earthy hop bitterness on the finish. Ripe dark fruits on the back end, plum and cherry. Finishes sweet but not cloying, malty, and leaving sticky sugars and oils coating the palate.

Feels big; smooth and creamy and sticky. Well-carbonated, so it coats the palate before moving.

Overall, a really good scotch ale. A solid example of the style, and quite tasty.

Pours mahogany and copper with browns and sultry orange hues. A fat tan head that lasts and clings. Nose is breaddy and has a touch of sweetness on it. Dark fruit like plum and a touch of earthy peat. Faint smoke. Hopes are not prominent on the nose. Taste follows the nose all the way. The Scotch ale seems to bring a touch of complexity that the brown ale does not. It also has a full mouthfeel and that too is different from the brown. The presence of the dark fruit as prominently as to be described as plum is a hall mark of the style. So is the mouthfeel. You can equate mouthfeel to the idea of how a liquid feels on your tongue. Light would be like water, medium like whole milk which does have some body and full is like cream. This beer drinks just like the nose but has a bit sweeter palate where you do see a few hops. Their pepper and spice will lead you to their bitterness that dries the finish and leaves this one medium dry. Small bubbles that just bite a little Finishes malty and drier. Not cloying or too sweet. Perfect example of the style. Light hearted but hearty. Fun and complex but not too rich or heavy. Strong with abv but very smooth.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Amazing looking brew, dark and inviting. First sniff, first sip and I can tell right away someone really dialed this beer in. Not on the massive side but still pretty big. Malt forward and relatively clean. Lots of depth and stands balanced which is not easy for this style but the brewers accomplished that to a T. Very easy to drink, probably on the of the most drinkable Scotch Ales I've had in a good while.

Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale has a thick, creamy, beige head, a mostly clear, brick-red appearance, some lazy bubbles, and moderate lacing strings left on the glass. The aroma is of sweet, brown bread crust, cherry skins, and maybe yeast. Taste is of those elements, with low-level, balancing hop bitterness, and no peat (as one will pick up with British-brewed Scotch ales). Mouthfeel is medium, and Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale finishes medium dry.

Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice ale pours a rich ruby tinged clear amber with a nice mead of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, light layer, and light lacing. Nose of caramel malts, brown sugars, and light grain notes. Flavors exceed the nose with strong rich malts touched with brown sugar on all sides, subtle notes of vanilla and peat hit middle to back with a light hop note that keeps it all in balance. Good mouth feel for the style, coating, lightly warming, and solid. Surprising for the brewer. Very nice.

Cheers

Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale | Genesee Brewing Co. / Dundee Brewing Co. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, this beer's head is three fingers thick and light tan, with web-like lacing, and a very deep reddish amber/mahogany body.

Smells not too much like scotch on the booziness, with full-bodied grains and malts.

I taste a toasted malt thing going on here with a milder scotch note.

The mouthfeel here is medium with mild carbonation.

I'll rate Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale | Genesee Brewing Co. / Dundee Brewing Co. with an overall 4.25.

Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale brewed by Genesee Brewing Co. / Dundee Brewing Co. This brew pours out a nice brown color with a nice off white head. This brew has an ABV of 7.50% The smell of Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale, is rich with roasted grains, and malts. There is also a sweetness and hops to the smell of this brew. This is a real inviting brew. This brew has the look of cola not saying that is a bad thing. Now for the taste is bold, but smooth with flavors. You first pick up on roasted grains and malts. Then a nice sweet smoothness . There is nothing overpowering about Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale, it has a real nice balance to it. It is really hard to pick up on the 7.50% ABV in this brew,it is just that smooth. The mouth feel of Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale, is Rich Bold , Clean, Smooth and Refreshing . Overall I'm giving Genesee Brew House Scotch Ale , a 4.50 out of 5. I would buy this brew again. Genesee Brewing Co. / Dundee Brewing Co.did a real nice job with this one.

Tastes like a scotch ale from a soda fountain. Seriously bad stuff here. Off flavors of yeast attack the toungue, the carbonation is unpleasing, and the malt flavor tastes of liquid extract.

A: [4.25] Leather brown with rich red hues. Forms 1 finger of clingy off white head. The head forms nice arcs on the sides of the glass. This looks great in the glass. The bottle lists the the ABV (7.5%) but the date code makes no sense.

S: [3.50] Slight musty scent, caramel, peat, leather.

T: [3.75] The tastes lacks the musty element (which is a plus). It has the caramel, peat, earthy tones, toffee, vanilla.

M: [3.50] Low side of medium bodied. Maybe even a touch watery. The finish is nice and caramely sweet.

O: [3.50] This is decent Scotch Ale. Certainly not my favorite. Like other Scotch Ales this opens up and gets more complex as it warms. I am a homer and I am happy to see Genesee making a comeback. I hope they continue to build their lineup. I'd buy this to continue to support them.

Poured a nice dark madeira with a 1 finger off-white head. Smells of caramel malts. Tastes pretty good! Better than their Imperial Black IPA (IMO). At least I am able to drink all of this one. Worth trying if you get the chance.

Nice dark garnet as described. Full off-white head that doesn't dissipate too quickly. Smells sweet, carmalized, roasted malts. Taste is heavy, rich, sweet, carmalized, roasted malts, slight butterscotch flavor. Alcohol comes through but, can be easily underestimated. The feel is very heavy, almost chewy, and syrupy. Surprised at the lack of peat flavor because the only other beer of this style I have tried had quite a bit. Got a nice quick buzz reviewing one beer, more of a dessert or nightcapper. Update: the second was not very enjoyable unfortunately, too syrupy and burnt sweetness.

Looks and smells great. First sip seems like something I D like, but it quickly turns toward feeling like you're drinking 12 oz of thick syrupy scotch. Not unique or exemplary at anything really.

Maybe that's what these styles of beer are supposed to be like, but I'm not a huge fan either way.

I Can't remember when I bought this 6 pack, probably late 2014/ early 2015. Served at cellar temp in a Duvel tulip.

Look: Fiery, reddish copper, khaki head, nice lacing.

Smell: rich, sweet caramel.

Taste: vine fruit with alcohol esters

Feel: soft but solid, good.

Overall: this is just ok

As the bottle says it pours a deep garnet with a thinner but sustained off white head atop, great rich color.Fruit and more fruit in the nose, not to be primative but almost like a gummy worm.slight caramel/toast is detected.A little thin in the feel but not to the point of being watery.Caramel and toast dominate the flavor profile with fruity undertones, does not seem as "big" as it is to me.Ok so Genesee is branching out, will be trying the other 'Test Batch' stuff soon.
