Had this on tap as part of a flight of Genesee Brew House beers. I'm impressed that Genesee would make a beer that's oak-aged, let alone one clocking in at 100 IBUs. I've always loved their brew house, it's a great addition to the brewery, but they seem to be stepping up their game with their latest beer.

The beer is very dark brown, almost black. The aroma is excellent- smoky, malty, and roasty, smells more like a porter or stout than a Black IPA.

The taste is amazing- the bitter hop flavor mixes with the roasty flavor incredibly well. Great job Genesee. I didn't feel the 9.4% alcohol at all.

If you're in the Rochester area, be sure to get a taste of this stuff. The best beer I've ever had by these guys, and I got to try it in a flight of other beers (they had a decent Hefe and a very solid English Brown as well) for $2. I might get a growler of it soon.

On tap at the Genesee Brew House on June 24, 2013 and again from a growler on June 25, 2013. So it is double-sampled.

It pours a deep dark brown with ruby reddish hues and a full, silky tan head. Great clarity.

The aroma is a complex festival of dark toasted malts, licorice, wood, light smoke, but ironically limited hops considering it is an IPA.

The body is full and bold.

The taste is roasty and dark with a surging bitter hop explosion at the end that lingers briefly. You don't even realize the hops are there until after you have swallowed it. The alcohol is well-integrated into the brew to be near non-recognizable.

Don't let the name Genesee fool you. This is an astonishing brew from them. I have not had anything quite like it before.
