Very Good

Notes: Ready to take it to the next level? This double IPA is fueled by hop flavor and aroma with enough bitterness to back the big malt body. Enjoy responsibly, this one's aptly named.

The look and initial smell don't indicate much about this DIPA but the sweet malty roast and the restrained bitterness balance the ABV very well in my experience of this beer. Very smooth, low carb mouth feel. Smart brew.

COD 5/16/16 Pours a clear dark amber, similar to a brown. World class head volume, lacing and retention.

Very good nose of rich toasted malt, caramel, light grapefruit with a touch of orange and a slight pine note.

Light medium body that is very smooth. Below normal carbonation level that leaves the carbonation / body balance lacking and fails to really open up the flavor. Mid-palate effervescence is almost adequate but the finish is where the effervescence is lacking.

The flavor profile is good. The base has a rich toasted malt character that the hopping level never quite balances. Bitterness is mild, which is acceptable for the style, but hop flavor is particularly lacking - all you get is a mild zest and pine note. Caramel arrives as a nice wave in the middle coupled with a nutty aspect. As it warms, the toasted malts assert themselves and also deliver a slightly burned bready note. When the sweetness fades, astringent alcohol becomes uncovered to a moderate degree. The finish is a slow, slightly sweet, fade that ends with light zest and pine coupled with uncovered alcohol and a touch of heat.

Received from @Dragginballs76 in a post NBS BIF #5 Ninja box.
16 oz canned 02/09/17 at stored and served 42 degrees, into a Jester King snifter.
Aroma – a bit flowery with some citrus, weakens.
Head huge (Maximum > eight cm, aggressive pour), off white, medium density froth, good retention eventually diminishing to an irregular two to twelve mm frothy ring and a frothy layer. A second pour produces a small (< two cm), dense head.
Lacing – fair. Large islands of tiny to medium bubbles.
Body – medium yellow, hazy.
Flavor – surprisingly light with very suppressed hops. A little malt shines through. A little dankness is also present. No alcohol, no diacetyl. However, when it warms in my mouth before swallowing, a little alcohol appears as does more dankness.
Palate – medium, watery, lively carbonation.

Drinks more like a session IPA than a DIPA. Not a bad thing as long as you are aware that it’s 8.5% ABV.

Appearance 4.75, Aroma 4, Flavor 4.25, Palate 3.75, Overall 4.25.
