Had it on tap before a Sox game.

A: Transparent red color, thick head with good retention.

S: Nothing stuck out, seems like everything balanced itself out.

T: Similar to smell, with no overpowering tastes. If anything, had a sweet malty taste.

M: Smooth and light

D: Overall very easy to drink. Definitely a good session beer if you find yourself at beer works without anything else you really want.

Pours a clear red with a giant foamy head. A real nice looking beer. The smell is light with only the scents of sweet malt. The taste is crisp with sweet malt and a somewhat creamy finish. The m/f is light and a little thin, but the flavors mix OK. Not a bad beer before a Bruins game.

Tasted On-Tap 09/30/05 at the Boston Beer Works - Fenway in Boston, MA.

Nice golden amber color with a decent off-white head and decent carbonation. Nicely balanced brew with nice subtle hop character in aroma and flavor to coincide with the lightly roasty malt flaovrs. A bit more than your average run of the mill Amber Ale. Medium bodied. Easily drinkable for a usually boring beer style.

I wonder if this is the same as the Boston Red ? I asked the waitress and she didn't seem to think so...

It had a light, off-white head with low retention. The color tended more towards copper than red, but let’s not quibble. It had a soft, sweetish nose and the mouthfeel was likewise soft and light. There was a mild sweetness on the tongue and I experienced the same on the finish. It was not a bad beer, but just a tad underwhelming. The Beer Menu mentioned that when this beer kicked, it was to be replaced by Back Bay IPA. At least I did my part to pave the way for fellow hopheads.

Served in 4oz. sample glass.

A: Dark red, auburn color. Thin head; lacing thin but sticks.

S: I was unimpressed. Nothing noticeable in the aroma.

T: Balanced flavor, maybe a bit weak with both malt and hops.

M: Smooth feel, good carbonation.

D: I could be convinced to drink only this for the night.

On-tap at Beer Works Fenway

A: The beer pours, not surprisingly, a red-amber color with a finger of off-white head.

S: Aromas of toasted bread and toffee to begin with. The hops follow with some grassy notes and a bit of citrus peel. It becomes a bit more caramel forward as the beer warms up a bit.

T: The flavor is very similar. While the balance of hop and malt character is good, the flavors sort of clash. Bitter pine and citrus peel don't seem to meld well with the toast, toffee, and caramel flavors.

M: The body is medium with smooth, medium carbonation.

O: There was something about the flavor that was just a little bit off to me, otherwise not bad.

Poured on-tap at Canal Street, and served in a pint glass. The beer is a dark, ruby-auburn coloring, with a ring of yellowish, filmy head. Slight, semisweet nose, with hints of caramel malty tang. The flavor is roasty, with a deep malt sweetness, and a bit of the deep, dark Wee Heavy tangy sweetness. Just a kiss of hops to clean up the palate at the end. The beer leaves rings on the glass as you go, with a dark and bittersweet aftertaste and a cloying, rich finish. Okay, but leans towards overpowering on the flavor profile if you drink in mass quantity.

A: Translucent red, borderline brown.

S: Weak, but sweetish, malt.

T: More of that sweet malt, combined with slight roasted caramel flavor.

M: Very lightly carbonated. It almost reminds me of flat soda.

D: Good session, but not something I would drink on a regular basis.

A fairly nice mahogany color with a thin off white head that faded quickly but did leave some lace.
The aroma was hard to place, maybe a bit of hops maybe a slightly sweet malty smell. At first the flavor seemed a bit sour or off. As this beer warmed it got a sweet sort of buttery or bready flavor. I was ready to taste another beer once I finished this one.

I had this beer at the Fens location in a 16 oz pint glass. The beer pours a fantastic, clear red with a two finger white head to it. Head has decent retention with slight lacing. I couldn't place the smell, not quite overpowering but the taste is much deeper than the scent would indicate. This has mild carbonation, and is a great accent to dinner.

A - no hops, earthy malt aroma.
A - thin white head, crystal clear red /amber.
M - low to medium carbonation, medium body.
T - Same malt flavors from aroma, slight sweetness right on the tip of the tongue. Suble hop flavors.
D - easy drinking but I would like it just a little drier personally.

Poured a pretty rusty red brick color with a thin filmy head. Perfectly clear. Nose is nondescript, not much going on at all. The malts come across as slightly tart and metallic at first. But it mellows out to a slight rye flavor. Hops come across as unripe fruit. Mouthfeel is very light and watery (a bit of a trend with Beer Works). All in all drinkable, but it is more of a solid offering and not much that interesting.

Presented from the cask in there standard 16oz. willy becher the beer was a dirty copper amber color that appeared a little cloudy. One finger of foamy white head sat atop the beer and left some spotty lacing.

The nose has a faint hop aroma with a bready malt balance. Some grainy and biscuitty smells, but a little bland aroma-wise.

The taste is malt and bready but not overly sweet or chewy. Slight hop presence finishes each sip with a dry but firm body. Some flowery easters surround the taste, but like the smell: a little bland.

Medium body and dry on the palate.

This one will not wow anyone, but sessionable and simple at best. Decent flavors present and well balanced, but an otherwise uneventful beer.

Pours a dark red body w/ a good head on it that died slow and this is on top of a basic aroma mixed w/ hops and malts. Taste is the same - while not going to knock off socks or anything there is a blend of citric hops and some spicy caramel malt and I found this beer had a good balance and was easy to drink.
