Many pancakes, many beers, and lots of ice cream! Collage area. Pretty modern looking, but still with lots of brick and rough-hewn wood. Tacky pop music, though one time when I was there they played Johnny Cash on the jukebox (see: http://hbd.org/mbas/saltydog/belgium1.html for my account). Dog at bar. Bar with rail on top, and no stools. Only lagers on the huge list are Jupiler NA, Carlsberg and Carlsberg Elephant. Nice selection of French beer, including ch'Ti, Adelscott, Goudale and Bezelbuth. A great place, and has often been my first stop on a Belgian trip, starting here with a great breakfast and some fine beer.

The Creperie Bretonne is a short mosey-on down the concrete steps, and just around the corner from the Le-Brasse-Temps (see BeerFly). But this is a totally different establishment to the former.
For a start, it is definitely not “new” – it is very well lived-in, comfortably worn, and just plain alternate. The décor comprises old rickety wooden tables and chairs, wedged at all angles in the small bar and other utilitarian, almost homemade looking, furniture.
Who Cares for the Beer menu is nothing short of superb, 200+ beers, with some real crackers; Trappists, Abbeys, Traditional Lambics, Fruit Beers, Saisons, and some very rare Wallonian brews (many only in the bigger 750ml bottles) to boot. This is the very best selection you will get in these parts “by far”.
But hold on a minute! Just check out the other ‘Lists’, for they also do (get this!); Pancakes (250+), Teas (70+), Coffees (50+), Cordials (30+), Ice-Creams (30+), it goes on. This is NOT the place to bring that un-decisive girlfriend for a night out, believe me! Erm…. “Do you want me to come back in 5 years”, says the waitress annoyingly.
What a place, totally unbelievable! Try the Pancakes and Ice-Creams (not all of them!!) – Bloody Marvellous. I had a couple of the rarer Wallonian Beers, but unfortunately finished with a simply awful Campus Gold (6%) from Huyghe Brewery - that left a strange aftertaste on my palate.
Service can be a tad slow at times; this must be the French influence (sorry couldn’t resist that). The “Breton Pancake House” is usually full of Students, but it was quiet at Easter during our visit (29th March 2002) - thankfully it was not Term Time. Probably only a 5 minute walk from the Train Station, if you are Rail-Roving, this is well worth a detour and easily accessible by Train.

A Word of Warning: Many beers in Belgium have both Flemish and French names, that are sometimes quite different. The French ones only are used here (what would you expect from the “break away” French-only speaking part of Leuven University). Fortunately, I was armed with both my ‘Tim Webb GBG2B&H’ and ‘Beers of Wallonia Guide’ to help me “conver-t-ranslate” some French beers names into Flemish, which are the names I am most familiar with. Very handy that.

I dearly love these idiosyncratic, almost “mad”, Belgium Bars. They are So Memorable, So Unique and just So Remarkable. Fantastic – and long may they continue.

You have to visit this place to believe it - Just be sure to ask for the “BEER” List though!!!
