Went on a mini brewery crawl this weekend stopping at Triple C, Heist, Birdsong, and finishing with dinner at Growlers Pourhouse. Started with Triple C, now for the next stop in our evening out... Charlotte's newest brewpub; Heist Brewery.

Situated in the cultural hub of NoDa, Heist occupies the old Highland Mill building. The place is beautiful... just the right mix of new and old. You get some very nice woodwork and stonework adorning the walls, while at the same time preserving the history of the space. When you walk in there is an open space with several tables and a bar, as you pass through into the next area you pass a kitchen area with a custom wood burning pizza oven that is open to the rest of the space so that the aroma of pizza baking fills the whole building. Once you stop gawking at the pizza oven you will notice a wall full of windows showcasing the brewhouse, and another bar area. Really, in addition to being eye catching and well laid out the place is huge, there is upstairs seating and yet a third bar type area with seats and tap handles. I could hang out here all day

The service is decent, the waiter we had was attentive and polite. He tried to be helpful, and knew a fair amount about the menu, but very little about the beer.

Now, on to the menu... I feel like this place has fallen victim to "celebrity chef syndrome". To many dishes that try to be just a bit too clever. Too little food for too high a price. Lobster Bisque Test Tubes, BBQ Braised Pork Belly Corn Dogs, Asian Shrimp with Lemon Wahhabi Cotton Candy?, Chicken and Waffles... C'mon man!! The burgers, and flat breads don't look too bad, but lets stop trying so hard to be the next food network star.

Now on to the main attraction... The beer. Unfortunately I am underwhelmed by the beer. Eleven house made beers on tap and all of them mediocre at best. How about we cut the beer menu down to a manageable four or five offerings and make them shine!! I don't need ten or eleven beers from a new start up brewery, I need two or three beers that blow my hair back (back when I had hair). We ordered two samplers so that we could try all of the beers, I thought the oatmeal stout was the best beer of the bunch. I would go on to describe the rest of them but I forgot about them even as I was drinking them. Now, don't get me wrong. None of the beers were deeply flawed, just uninspired. While none of them knocked my socks off, none of them were offensive or had bad off flavors either, just boring. I'm not looking for crazy, extreme beers, just good beers done well.

I really wanted to like this place. I was pulling for them to be the next great Charlotte area brewery... and they still could be, but there is work to be done.

All in all I am ready for the next place, on to Birdsong...

While visiting Charlotte, and after reading a few recommendations on the forum, my wife and I stopped in on a Sunday evening to check it out. There is a very sizable patio area (I believe I saw a couple of dogs outside, none inside), and then the brewpub has 3 sections.. the bar area, the restaurant area (with a windowed view of the brewery), and the live music area (with another bar).

The place was hopping upon arrival. The hostess asked us if we wanted to check out the rest of the brewpub, and choose where we wanted to sit. The restaurant table area was closed (it was a Sunday night), and the live music was about to start, so my wife and I settled in the bar. We were quickly tended to, the food (wings) was very good.. but the real reason for being there was the brew. We started with a flight, then moved on to our own selections. All of the beers were very good, but Ripe With It (Pale) stole the show for the both of us.

The service was excellent, prices in-line for a brewpub, the staff VERY friendly, and there is no reason for us not to beeline back to HB the next time we visit!

We bought a couple glasses, shirts and growlers before Ubering back.

Went here a couple times when in town for business. Blown away by this place. There's actually 3 different bars in the place and 2 separate kitchens. First night sat in the far back bar. All same beer options however food option scaled down to appetizers and a few sandwiches. Definitely scaled down in decor as well. Fewer patrons in the back for sure, however service was top notch. Second night sat in main area and vibe was way better. Full menu options available. Got the spicy pork flatbread and it was fantastic. Loved this place. Hidden gem in this beer-friendly city/state.

VERY good quality on ALL beers. Absolutely NO "off" tastes at all.
The "hive fives" is an amazing beer that I have to brew...
Very good place.

Heist makes the best NE style IPAs outside of New England, and I personally prefer them over Trillium and Treehouse. The food is very good, try the wings and flatbread. Although the service can be a bit slow at times, it's only because they are such a popular spot to visit. The bartenders are all great and do a good job keeping us. Overall it's the best brewery in Charlotte, no contest.

review updated on 2/21/17...

I have given up on getting anything to go from this brewery due to their weird ass whimsical policies, release planning, etc... I'm not a native NC'er, so maybe my tolerance for hyped beer is just too low and/or my perspective is off. Dunno.

My first experience was okay, not bad. Tried a few beers, food was decent, got a growler (yes, glass) to go. Was told they couldn't fill outside growlers and so had to buy one of theirs. This is a pet peeve of mine, but not uncommon necessarily. So overall, pretty normal experience. Really dug the beers I had. So when I saw they did can releases, naturally, I wanted in. Twice I went for cans (in the middle of a work day?) and had to leave empty-handed due to the fact that they were already so packed I couldn't stay and miss more time at work. But whatever...I get it...hype. Could they maybe limit allocations a bit more so maybe I'd have a shot at a single 4 pack after work? I bet they could. But that's their business decision to grab the cash instead of evenly distributing among the masses. Again, a pet peeve, but ultimately I'm fine with this...not uncommon. I wrote off these experiences mostly, because I just frankly don't care enough. Gave up trading a while back. So figured I'd just head over on a day they weren't having a release and grab some stuff in my Heist growler that I bought specifically because I was told back during first visit that I had no choice.

Fast forward to this last Friday - I stop in with my Heist growler that I bought specifically because I was told back during first visit that I had no choice. I'm informed they no longer fill growlers. Hmmm. Cool, I now have another useless growler to add to my collection of roughly 3 million. So okay, can I get a couple crowlers of your hoppy stuff? Answer: Nope. Why? Answer: We don't fill crowlers of our hoppy stuff. WTF is going on here? How many times am I going to leave your brewery empty handed?

So in conclusion, having three kids and a busy work schedule, no matter how hard I try, it seems as though I cannot, literally, support this brewery. It's a fucking oddity of bizarre proportions to me. Four combined experiences over the course of 6+ months have led me to this conclusion. It was not an isolated incident. No brewery is so good that they are beyond reproach, and at the very least, they seem to be guilty of not thinking through their logistics. Yes, Heist makes good beer. If they ever distributed locally, I'd probably still buy their hoppy shit...but until then, I will be going up the road to Legion instead to fill unlimited growlers of whatever the fuck I want, namely Juicy Jay. I just can't be bothered with this nonsense.

The tap list on the internet site versus what was actually available at the brewery was way different - big let down!!!!

Older reviews of this place are usually pretty poor because their beer wasn't very good. They've recently had some changes with the brewing staff and things have gotten much better. At this point they are definitely one of the top breweries in Charlotte and in North Carolina. The inside of the space is very cool and the staff are all very friendly.

Building is a renovated warehouse and has a nice touch to it. I got a couple pints while my girlfriend got a flight so we tried plenty of stuff. All the beers were well done and unique.. although two of the more interesting small batch beers that we had gone to try were kicked, so that was slightly disappointing and limited selection. The bartender was friendly and knowledgable. The food sounded amazing, and we have heard good things, but we just snacked on some ancho chili edamame, which was outstanding.
