Flanders red style soured in 3rd use neutral American oak barrels for over a year. This Flanders red style sour starts off our series in a bold way. This ruby red, medium bodied sour, aged in oak for almost a year, finishes crisp and acidic with aromas of black currant and cherry fruits.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 9/2014. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing slings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour/tart/tangy lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus zest, cherry, cranberry, peach, plum, pear, apricot, currant, red/green apple, red grape/wine, toasted oak, hay, straw, grass, honey, candi sugar, wheat, cracker, and white bread dough; with lighter notes of oaken vanilla, peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark/bready malts, and oak barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour/tart/tangy lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus zest, cherry, cranberry, peach, plum, pear, apricot, currant, red/green apple, red grape/wine, toasted oak, hay, straw, grass, honey, candi sugar, wheat, cracker, and white bread dough; with lighter notes of oaken vanilla, peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate lactic tartness, Brett/wine tang; and light yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus zest, cherry, cranberry, peach, plum, pear, apricot, currant, red/green apple, red grape/wine, toasted oak, hay, straw, grass, honey, candi sugar, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, oaken vanilla, peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark/bready malts, and oak barrel flavors; with an awesome malt, tart, tangy, spiciness balance; and no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tang/tartness, and yeast/wine/oak spiciness. Medium-plus carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and fairly acidic/tangy/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 7%. Overall this is a fantastic Flanders red ale. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, dark/bready malts, and oak barrel flavors; very smooth, easy, and fairly crisp/clean to drink; with the mellowly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish; not overly lactic or tannic on wine barrels. Fantastic well rounded Brett/Bacteria complexity; with great wine barrel presence/integration, and malt backbone against acidity. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazingly spot on style example. I can definitely say the age helped this one out, vs the other ratings.
