Appearance - The beer was golden in color with a white head.

Smell - More than anything, the booze jumped out in the nose.

Taste - Hot oaky vanilla was my dominant impression. Any resemblance of the base beer has been smothered. The booze is the predominant taste.

Mouthfeel - The disgusting allowed the burn.

Overall - I expected better from this brewery.

Something is clearly off with this bottle (beer). My bottle was clearly in line with the reviews below that found something off.

Opened this and it smells like a cheap white wine - tart white grapes and green apples. As it warms it takes on an even more sour white trap aroma. Taste follows the nose with that vinous white trap flavor and tart green apples. Strong buttery flavor - like butterscotch - on the back end. Seems to imply an infection. NO barrel character whatsoever - Id never know this had been in a barrel if it didn't say so on the label. Feel is remarkably thin - regardless of its other issues - for the style. That would have been am issue anyway. Appearance was a light orange color - clear and effervescent. Thin orange thinned white head dissipates leaving a thick ring of white foam along the outside of the beer.

Overall - a total DUD.

More carbonation for a BBBW than you'd expect but it doesn't leaving any lacing. The color and murkiness is far from appealing, even if it isn't atypical for a barleywine. The aroma is clean with caramel and toffee coming through quite strongly. The flavor follows suit with more of the same, which is delicious. Hops are really restrained as you'd expect given the "English" title and the age, and that makes me happy. Bourbon is nicely integrated; even though they're not the oldest barrels they're high quality ones and it shows. I'm shocked this isn't rated more highly, and sad I didn't buy another bottle.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled fall of 2015.

Pours an orange color, mostly clear, with a short head and some lacing. Smell brings malt, yeast, grapes, bourbon, vanilla, raisins, plums, some figs, some brown sugar, a little bread. Taste also leads with the malt, more bourbon than the nose, vanilla, oak, raisins, some figs, caramel, plums. This is mighty good, I like the Van Winkle barrels. Smooth, great body, taste lingers.

Good English barleywine, the barrels were pretty awesome, too. While I could pick out the traditional dark fruits in this, they weren't as intense for the style as many. Had this beginning of February, wish I had another bottle to put some age on. Well worth a purchase.

A - Pours a clear amber with a one finger fizzy white head. Light spotty lacing.

S - Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, plums, and toffee.

T - The flavor starts with a strong caramel sweetness followed by vanillla, honey, and bourbon. The finish has light alcohol burn.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel with a dry finish.

O - An enjoyable English barleywine. The bourbon dominates the flavor but still enjoyable.

This is a solid English Barleywine.

A: I think the Appearance is the primary reason this may have lower ratings. Color is unexpectedly straw yellow and not brown as most Barleywines are.

S: Sweet Vanilla, maybe a little Almond. Quite nice.

T: ABV is completely and dangerously hidden, tastes like 7 or 8%. Some barrel aging in the taste, but
could use a more pronounced barrel aging taste. Light vanilla and lighter almond in the taste with
suggestion of bourbon in the back.

F: perhaps a tad light.

O: While this is not a top 10 English Barleywine, it is an enjoyable one. This is an English Barleywine, that could be enjoyed in the height of the Summer due to it's' light sweetness and body.
