Large shared bottle.
Black-brown body with a thin but durable head.
Excellent use of bourbon barrel aging; the effects enhance more than dominate the dark roasted grains of the base stout.

Don't understand the high ratings on this one. Hot boozy mess, like they dumped the booze right into the bottle instead of letting it age in a barrel. Stout base is thin and overall pretty flavorless. No Rules? No way. Just OK.

Pour: 650ml bottle. no bottled on date. Think it was purchased in mid-2017 but could have been earlier. Ha been stored primarily in a fridge. Served in hotel room tumbler at Bay Harbor Inn. Dark, dark brown, completely opaque. One finger tan head. Leaves a nice ring with decent lacing. Attractive.

Nose: caramel, turbanado or other sugar or maybe the vanilla imparting plenty of sweetness. bourbon and chocolate. Lots going on and just pungent enough.

Taste: burnt toast, sweet vanilla, sugar, dark chocolate, hint of dark fruits. Extremely well balanced sweet and bitter. Not cloying at all. Plenty of malt backbone and, as suggested on the label, very smooth. No rough edges.

Mouthfeel: even though an old bottle and high ABV, this has decent, moderate carbonation. Tingles the tongue just a bit. Not syrupy but coats the tongue bit with a relatively clean finish.

Overall: aging may have helped his relative to my first impression. I really like it and would heartily recommend trying. There are plenty of good, big RIAs but this is complex, well balanced and easy drinking.

Pours a typical black, with minimal head. Every so slight barrel note. Fairly non-descript taste, pretty blah in my opinion, with a hint of barrel as a redeeming quality. I will give it big points on the finish though, as there is not one hint whatsoever that this is 13%. I did a double take and grabbed to bottle to double check when I was told.

I wish the beer was as awesome as the packaging. Pretty easy drinking for such a high ABV, but overall just average, not overly complex or impressive

This is a great stout, but you can't appreciate it unless it hits about 60degrees... when you do the chocolate, Roasty notes come out and the barrel becomes present.

The barrel is not the lead here, that's the base beer, and it works great. Tons of chocolate and an overall great flavor. This is very good and should be appreciated as a barrel aged beer where the barrel doesn't take the lead.
