Style: Schwarzbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Black Ale is low in gravity, clean, crisp, and flavor-filled; giving off a bread-like aroma. This beer proves that deep colors do not signify rich potency. Our Black Ale is deceptively light on the tongue.

On tap.

A - Very dark, no head, minimal lacing.

S - Toasted malts, a little chocolate.

T - Lots of toasted malts, chocolate, a hint of coffee. Not very strong flavors at all.

M - With the appearance, I thought it would be a little more full but it is definitely a traditional ale/lager feel. Thin with no coating at all. Sort of disappointing but probably only because I was expecting different.

O - Nothing to write home about. Thin flavors, decent appearance. I wouldn't search it out again. First offering I've had from Perrin and I'm a little disappointed because I've heard good things.

After a long day of driving a working outside this beer sounded very good. Despite the cold, something lighter was in order and I have a thing for dark beers so this one sounded awesome. Plus, it was a local option since I was in Grand Rapids.

This beer pours a black and opaque hue with very little carbonation visible. An off white head recedes quickly to a thin ghostly lacing that is retained. 4/5 The aroma is definitely dark with notes of heavily toasted wheat bread, coffee, and dark chocolate, along with some grassy hops thrown in. Undertones of wood and char come through lightly. Overall the aroma is fairly muted. 3.5/5 The flavor is definitely not muted with both caramel and molasses leading the way. Toasted wheat bread, char, and tobacco make up the middle of the flavor profile with grassy hops providing a moderately bitter finish that lingers lightly after swallowing. It is somewhat grainy overall, despite the sweetness and hop bitterness. 4/5 This is a medium bodied beer that shows off a light carbonation burn up front before transitioning to a light dryness that lingers upon wallowing. 4/5 This is a very tasty and balanced Schwarzbier with flavors that are nicely balanced and complementary. Unfortunately, the aroma is quite muted, but luckily the flavor makes up for that. I would definitely come back to this one. 4/5

Enjoyed from the 12 oz can in a snifter. This nice black ale pours
a deep yet clear brownish black with a nice head of light tan foam that
settles to a thick ring and thin pool with light lacing. Nose of chocolate,
light coffee, and deeply roasted malts with a touch of cola notes. Flavors follow
the nose with chocolate and light cold pressed coffee notes on the front and middle,
cola notes hit nicely on the sides and finishes on the back with a subtle light hop note
and a clean finish. Excellent mouth feel, medium light carbonation and lightly slick.
Overall an excellent session black.

Cheers

Solid black lager, not to many bubbles, malt flavor is forefront with soft notes of chocolate and coffee.

There is what I believe a duplicate listing for this beer, the other one being an American Black Ale. I believe Schwarzbier better describes this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts, coffee. Taste is roasted malts, mild coffee, very light hops. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.

I picked up a can of Perrin's Black for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. I've had this beer before, but now that it's in cans I thought I would give it a proper review, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a 12oz can into a imperial pint glass.

A- The can looks nice, it's got a nice clean design and it's just a little eye catching. It poured a nice black color that took on more of a brown color when held to the light with a little over half a fingers worth of creamy light tan head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, i have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the malts being the first to show up and they impart a nice medium roasted aroma with some chocolate, slight coffee, bready malt and a little bit of a grainy malt aroma with some doughy yeast showing up in the background. Up next comes a little bit of a nutty aroma with a little bit of a creamy aroma and noticeable hop aromas. This beer has a pretty nice aroma, it's what I would expect from the style.

T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with those same roasted malts being the first to show up and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma, but this time more of a roasted aroma comes through with some coffee and not as much chocolate and the grainy, bready and biscuit malt aspects also show up a little more than they did in the aroma. Up next comes that same noticeable nutty aspects that I got in the aroma with some doughy yeast showing up in the background. On the finish there's pretty much no bitterness with some sweetness taking it's place and there's some roasted malt flavors in the aftertaste. This is a good tasting beer, it's just what I would expect from the style.

M- Very smooth, a little crisp, a little creamy, medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and good example of the style, it was pretty much spot on for a dark ale, it had that nice lighter bodied while retaining those good roasted malt aspects. This beer had good drinkability, I could drink a couple of these. What I like the most about this beer was the taste and how true to style it was, those were the highlights for me. What I like the least about this beer is the head retention, I wish that was a little better. I would buy this beer again when looking for a good Dark Ale and I would recommend it to anyone doing the same. All in all I liked this beer, it's what I was expecting for the style and nothing seemed to be out of place with all the aspects working well together. It's not my favorite Perrin beer, but it is one of the better Black Ales I've had. Good job guys, this is a tasty Black Ale.
