The Whole Foods in Newport Beach is not so much a grocery store as it is a monument to the slow rot of civilization, a temple to the self-obsessed cult of kale smoothies and Instagram-worthy protein bowls. Trying to park here is an exercise in masochism—an endless ballet of Teslas and Cybertrucks jockeying for position like rhinos in heat, their drivers peacocking in mirrored sunglasses and silent contempt. The lot hums with the energy of desperate vanity, a swirling vortex of privilege and impatience.

Inside, it’s worse. Yoga moms in Lululemon glide through the aisles like predatory swans, armed with credit cards and an unshakable sense of superiority. The air is thick with the scent of artisanal cheese and overpriced lavender, the fluorescent lighting casting a harsh spotlight on a parade of new money posers.

But deep in the belly of this capitalist beast, past the stacks of quinoa and the kombucha shrine, lies an unlikely refuge: a small taproom. An oasis of sanity amidst the madness, its quiet hum calls to the weary traveler, the overstimulated and the overwhelmed. Here, the air changes. No kombucha. No pressed juices. Just beer—local brews served with the unspoken understanding that this is a place to hide, not to flaunt.

The beers themselves? Serviceable. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to scoff at either. A hazy IPA here, a pilsner there—simple pleasures for simple needs. This is not a place for connoisseurs or untappd warriors. This is where you go to recalibrate, to nurse a pint and regain your grip on reality before braving the gauntlet of gluten-free nonsense and organic dog treats once again.

I sat there for a while, staring at the rows of taps and nursing something crisp and forgettable, watching the steady stream of escapees shuffle in, their eyes hollow but hopeful. This is where the disillusioned come to remember what beer tastes like, where the last vestiges of human authenticity cling to life.

When the glass was empty, I left as I came—in a quiet rage. The taproom had done its job, but it could not erase the horrors outside. Newport Beach is not a place for the sane. It is a gilded zoo, a glossy dystopia where even the beer can only do so much. God help us all.
