Abita Macchiato Espresso Milk Stout combines the rich flavor of roasted coffee with a full-bodied stout. Pale, caramel, chocolate and roasted malts create a dark color and intense flavor. Willamette hops balance the malt flavors, while natural milk sugar and oats add sweetness. During the cold brewing process, espresso dolce beans from PJ's Coffee are added for a natural coffee flavor.

Bottle poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass

A: Pours dark brown with a frothy tan head that settles to a firm layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Roasty, coffee, dark chocolate, earthy, a touch of char, herbal undertones, toasted bready malt, and a touch of toffee sweetness.

T: Roasty, earthy, solid hit of coffee, dark chocolate, and a little char, slight herbal notes, toffee and lightly burnt sugar, toasty bready malt, and a little lactose.

M: On the fuller side of medium body, moderate carbonation, a little creamy.

O: Got a little more roast and bite and a little less sweetness to it than a lot of the milk stouts out there. Not my favorite coffee beer, but it is solid.

From the neck of the bottle: "BEST BY 05/04/20"

Appearance: The beer has a black body but as light passes through it shows brown with good clarity and a hint of red. The head is a fluffy tan cap with a rocky surface of small and large bubbles. Very good retention and it develops good lacing on the glass.

Aroma: The beer has a clear coffee aroma, that smells a bit more like coffee grounds after brewing than the coffee itself.

Taste: Coffee comes to the palate at first with an earthy flavor that lasts throughout the drinking experience. Towards the middle and back of the palate there is a bit of carbon flavor. The aftertaste is coffee.

Mouthfeel: The beer has a medium body with average carbonation. It's easy to drink which is nice. The label states that this is a "Milk Stout" but the texture feels less than the average. Low bitterness.

Overall: It tastes and feels like a pretty average coffee beer, but it looks amazing in the glass. The base beer doesn't come through at all with the possible exception of some carbon in the flavor. It tastes like coffee so coffee enthusiasts might still enjoy it but even then the coffee doesn't taste or smell that complex. I could drink it again if I wanted a coffee beer and it was the only one available. As a whole I'd recommend it if it's freely available.

5 oz pour on tap. A full bodied, flavorful coffee milk stout. Definitely on the roasty side vs. sweet which works pretty for the relatively low abv. Solid.

Best by 5/4/20. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a khaki head that falls leaving great retention and solid lacing. The aromas have a nice amount of coffee leading the way. Some chocolate. Hints of vanilla. Some roasted malts. The flavors basically follow the nose. More coffee along with some subtle hints of vanilla. Some ash. Subtle hints of chocolate in the mix. Some milk. There's a mild sweetness. Low to no bitterness. Malts do their thing. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy, slightly creamy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid coffee stout. It might not be "mind blowing", but the coffee still shines and delivers. Not bad at all. I like it.

A - Dark body, opaque, pours with a light tan, which fades quickly. Not much lacing.

S - Strong coffee and roasted malt, a bit of chocolate, a hint of char.

T - Follows the nose, with strong coffee up front, a middle lush with chocolate and blackened toast notes, and a mild bitter bite.

M - Fairly light stout, a touch sticky, but with a scrubbing close that clears the tongue.

O - The promise of espresso is delivered, and the flavor is delicious. I like a richer, more robust feel, but this is quite drinkable and really delivers on coffee.

$5.29 (Includes discount and tax)/bomber ($ 0.240/oz) from Oppermann’s Cork ‘N’ Ale, Saginaw, MI.
Best by 1/06/18. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – initially milk chocolate, but quickly overtaken and beaten into submission by the expresso. The expresso remains to the bitter end.
Head large (Maximum 5.4 cm, semi-aggressive pour), tan, dense froth with rocks, good retention, slowly diminishing to an irregular three to nine mm ring and a complete layer, mostly thin with a large rocky thicker portion.
Lacing – good. Dense wide sections of tiny to small bubbles.
Body – dark brown, opaque.
Flavor – starts out with a mild coffee flavor, surprising because of the coffee nasal overload. Follow-up belches are distinctly expresso. Allowing it to warm in my mouth reveals some sweetness and weak caramel as well as some lively carbonation. Either way, it ends with a bitter coffee aftertaste with a long hang time.
Palate – medium, nearly creamy, soft carbonation.

This is definitely a coffee-flavored not-so-stout drink. Very passable unless you’re a purist about your stouts. If so, then it’s a bargain at $ 0.240/oz.

Appearance 4.25, Aroma 4, Flavor 4, Palate 3.5, Overall 4.
