Brewed by:
Abita Brewing Co.
Louisiana, United States

Style: English Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is an oatmeal stout that is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and roasted malts. Oats are also added to give the beer a fuller and sweeter taste. The roasted malts give the beer its dark color as well as its intense flavor and aroma. The flavors of toffee and chocolate are prevalent but not overpowering. Since the beer gets so much flavor from the malts there is not a lot of hop flavor. There is just enough hop bitterness to complement the sweetness of the malt.

On tap at the Growler Station in Greenville. 6% ABV.

Poured with a fine, creamy tan head that suggested a nitro tap (was not). Sone orange highlights at the edges.

Once the head dies down, which took a while and some sipping, it has a relatively strong aroma with plenty of dark roasted grains, a hint of smoke, and a clear suggestion of dark chocolate.

Flavor: moderately strong and midly bitter with excellent bitter/sweet balance. Plenty of dark roasted grains with a hint of smoke bt no burnt toast or char. Some black coffee and oats in the finish.

Feel: medium+ body; nearly creamy smooth texture.

O: This Abita is worth seeking out.

Pours a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is roasted malt and lots of it.
The taste is a nice mixture of roasted and toasted malt, molasses and black licorice.
The texture is fairly crisp, which lends to its drinkability.
A excellent stout.

Appearance: Dark mahogany in color, opaque to light, with a large, robust tan head, and prominent, unbroken lacing.

Aroma: An abundance of dark malt greets the senses, with prominent coffee, bitter chocolate, and dark cocoa.

Taste: Opens with prominent bitter cocoa and chocolate, these carry throughout the taste. There are hints of black licorice as well, though quite subtle, as well as molasses. Late in the taste, the cold coffee dominates.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, full and rich, velvety to the palate.

Drinkability/notes: Very nice, quite authentic to the style, a fine example.

Presentation: Packaged in a sixty-four ounce brown glass Pecan Street growler, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

On-tap 12/20/2014 at Boundary Brewhouse in Pawtucket, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a short brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains coffee, oats, roasted malts, some chocolate and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a hearty roasted malt character. Then some flavors of coffee and chocolate come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Black pour with a brown one-finger head. Roasted coffee aroma. Full bodied and smooth. Light roasted flavor with a good bit of grain in the taste. Can taste some coffee, roasted malt and espresso. Finishes with a slightly bitter espresso taste.
